Hi,

I have Suse 9.3. installed and a floppydrive which acts problematic. When I
click on the icon for the floppy I get a message saying that the "process
for the media protocol died unexpectedly" . I have tested the floppystation
on a windows box, and it works fine there. I have tried with different
floppies, and I get the same result.

I have checked under "hardware information" for the floppydrive, and the
last line after type, resources etc, says not ready: yes.

What have I not done? Or what can I do to sort this out?

Hmmm you don't give any clues as to what's wrong. I'd suspect your
automounter or fstab.
Anyway, login as yourself and su - (to become root - you don't login as
root do you?)
Start a terminal and type the following (ignoring the # - it's a sh
thing):
# mdir a:
If you see the contents of the floppy, we can conclude the following: 1)
You have mtools installed (a good thing) 2) The floppy is DOS compatible
3) The floppy drive works as expected 4) The floppy works as expected So
on the assumption of sucess, try:
# mount /media/floppy
and if no error is returned:
# ls /media/floppy
if no error is returned, it the problem exists with the automounter.
If you can't "cleanly" execute mount /media/floppy, then it's probably
with fstab.

Hope this helps.

When I run mdir a: I get the response "cannot initialize 'A'
When I run mount /media/floppy I don't get any message, then I run ls
/media/floppy the response are:
/bin/ls: /media/floppy: Media not found.

Does this make any sense to you?

IIRC there was a hotplug problem with suse 9.3 with the floppy automount.
An online update sorted the problem. Make sure that you have all the
updates, maybe even reinstall hotplug/automount from the update site.
