According to the sources in sis5513.c ver. 0.16ac+vp (your integrated IDE |
controller is actually an early version of SiS 5513) this chipset version
is not capable of UDMA only MWDMA-16. This is not a limitation or 'problem'
of *NIX but a limitation of the chip itself.

Just as an aside, I have a machine with a 5513 chipset in it that
doesn't do UDMA because the computer doesn't need that speed. It runs
linux too BTW and it's only a 166Mhz P1 with 64 Meg.

This chipset uses and old version of SiS 5513 IDE controller that doesn't |
support UDMA only MWDMA-16 (according to the sources of sis5513.c). So
there isn't any problem with Linux/*BSDs is a limitation of the chipset
itself.

It looks like you have an Intel chipset modem and Lucent chipset modem. I |
think have used modems using those chipsets with GNU/Linux, but not using
the Windows drivers (as it appears you are attempting to do.) I compiled
the kernel driver. I like using the native driver, but I realize
compiling anything can be intimidating to some users. This post explains
what I did for the Intel modem.

I noticed after I posted that you are using a Intel-537EP. There is a
separate source/driver for that chipset. My links refer to Intel-536EP,
and that is the wrong driver. It appears version 2.7.95.0 is the latest
driver for the 537EP:

You said you have tried two versions of Suse. I see that Intel
supports Suse version 9.3 directly with a binary driver. Suse 9.3 is a
little old, though. The source is the best way, but you'll need to be
able to follow their instructions carefully.
