solaris 10 64 bit on hp a1540n ... ideas and thoughts
|
|
|
Looks like a new hp desktop machine out a1540n it's an AMD x2 4200
based machine ( 2 gig of DDR2 RAM ) think it's a hp commissioned asus
based motherboard ( could be wrong there ). SATA hard drive.
It's got some kind of built in video nvidia 6150 le ( shared memory ).
Probably I would put in some kind of pci express video card ( ati x1300
? / nvidea 7300 ? ).
Any thoughts on how well solaris 10 64 bit is going to do with this
kind of new machine? I don't care if I don't have drivers for
everything if most of the machine is operational.
Does solaris 10 installer offer any kind of dual boot support when
installing?
Thanks in advance.

I checked the Solaris Hardware Compatibility List:
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/overview.html
and I didn't seem to find it. You may end up having to use Solaris
Express or "build your own" version from OpenSolaris.

I get the feeling that you are really asking does Solaris 10 support
AMD Athlon x2 on Socket AM2. Only Socket AM2 uses DDR2 ram.
I too would like an answer to that question.

use Nvidia . No 3D driver for ATI on solaris.

Yes, Solaris 10 uses GRUB boot system. If another OS is installed
before Solaris an entry for that OS should appear in the GRUB menu.
Or you can edit one in.

Thanks yes maybe that is a better question.
These machines are probably just starting to hit the marketplace.

I don't plan on really using 3D on the machine but nividia makes sense.

I would plan on shrinking down the evil windows partition before doing
the install ... and see what happens.
Thanks Lars. |

The machine is just out in the marketplace one of probably quite a few
new AMD DDR2 capable machines that will be out shortly ... so I
wouldn't expect it to be on compatibility list yet.

Just an update ... it looks like the install of sol 10 6/6 x86 is going
well on the hp a1540n.
The installer saw and recognized the nividia 7300 pci express graphics
card.
So it looks like sol 10 x86 is not having any problems with the new
version of AMD chipsets.
Thanks John |

Bot one this afternoon. Very disappointed. Kinda slow, very slow.
Flimsy hardware, keyboard mouse, box doesn't even stand level.
Poor, very poor manual. No labeling what each plug socket is.
Very poor to non-existant instructions. |

Are you talking about hp a1540n?
For the price it's a very nice machine. Dual core AMD 4200 with 2 gig
of DDR2 ram.
Probably there will be a ton of new hardware in the marketplace within
the next couple of weeks/months based on the latest AMD chipsets.
Solaris 10 6/6 install went in pretty smoothly. There is an onboard
NIC that solaris didn't seem to deal well with so I added in a netgear
gigabit NIC from HCL. For under 100 dollars I put in a pci express
graphics card ( nvidia 7300 something ? ) instead of using the
motherboard based shared memory graphics.
"Kinda slow" ... compared to what exactly?
If you don't replace the shared memory graphics card probably it can be
somewhat quirky in performance characteristics.
What os? |

I have tried it with a very similar setup, but a single core sempron for
now. it installs ok, but i am using an old ATI rage 64MB video card for
now, and am having problems with the Xserver. I did have some quirky
things with the built in gigabit ethernet, but mainly with windows XP.
Ill be damned if i have gotten a linux distro to work yet, debian didnt
even see my SATA drive, mandrake said the MBR looked too mangled(???),
and I cant remember what happened with SUSE...

As far as the hp a1540n, centros 4.3 did go in smoothly on the SATA
drive.
Linux did have some big problems for a while with SATA mostly those
should be fixed by now.
But the new hp machine is "for right now anyway" just running solaris
10 and is quite an inexpensive and nice workstation. |

even now debian (at least net-install) has problems with nVidia RAID
SATA, and adaptec SCSI RAID.
