set boot_osflags A
set os_type Unix
The system should be set up like this if installing Tru64 if it is no
already

The leaflet which I received from HP with the Tru64 kit said :
set auto_action halt
set boot_osflags ""
It doesn't mention os_type variable, but I had set it on some previous
ocassion.
So, fially I have Tru64 installed, but I have some other problems. I will ask
about them in separate threads.

Unfortunately i *think* im in the situation whereby the two revisions
of Tru64 won't support the hardware which i accquired (with VMS on
them), i have a alphastation 5/500 (i think it is, 5/5xx series,
500mhz single cpu, dark blue desktop case, etc) which i suspect wont
run on that version of the OS, any idea where i may be able to spring
for a slightly more vintage copy of the OS if that is the case?
It's just that ive got the hardware all working (debian potato) and am
uncertain from all the stuff i've read on the dec/archived-within-hp
site if the software will even work correctly on my hardware. Can
anyone point me in the right direction, either on compatability or on
where i may get an older release (hobbyist/single user license, yadda
yadda)
Cheers,
Michael
p.s. sorry if this seems a daft question, this seemed the best place
to ask after an evening on google.

Does anyone of you know how to get a Tru64 media and license for
hobbyist purposes ? I purchased Alpha Server 1200 and would like to get
acustomed with OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX, but I don't know where to get
them. OpenVMS is a separate story, I wrote to vms newsgroup with a
question. How about Tru 64 UNIX ?
I got a single CDR (not a CD, a CDR) with "Tru64" written on it, but it
seems to be broken, it doesn't boot. When I mount it, I see vmunix in
its root, so I think it might be installation CD. Maybe I could make it
bootable somehow using mkisofs, cdrecord etc under Debian Linux for
Alpha, which is currently installed. But its a long and unsure way,
moreover I'd like to be a legitimate user, with some sort of educational
/ hobbyist license.
Regards and thanks for help in advance,

I run Tru64 4.0G on a 500/266. I suspect later versions would run as well.
Support has been cut for 5.1B and later for boxes as old as AXP 3000.
Tru64 media sometimes appear on eBay. With the "builtin" OSFUSR license
you can at least install and run the system as root, for multi-user you
would need OSFBASE. |

Hey, just had a bit of a look on another one of those million and one
obscure links on the HP/Compaq DEC website, as it turns out the
alphastation 500 series of hardware is compatible, well it appears to
be, they were nice and vuage about it. Will probably just follow up
with them & get a hobbyist OS license or something.
Cheers people,
Mike
