Software RAID1 = HD light always on?

I just got my self a new computer and installed Debian on it with SW
RAID1 configuration for the main partition. I noticed that the HD light
is always on. When the HD is writing/reading the light blinks, but then
the rest of the time it is always on. I can here that the HDs aren't
grinding but the light is still on. Is there something about SW RAID in
linux that keeps that light on all the time?
During the boot sequence, and wile setting things in BIOS the light is
off. The light does not bother me, it's just that I am concerned for
the drives, not sure if they are actually doing something, or its just
the light. Also, the HDs have been getting very hot, though they are new
and I am not sure what's normal and what isn't for them.
Any ideas?

cat /proc/mdstat to see if it's rebuilding raid.

What brand/model are your drives, and what temperatures are they reporting? |

I think it may have been rebuilding. The light has turned off finally some
time over night and the HD's have cooled down. It turned off after about 6
hours of being on. The drives are brand new and I did a clean format an
install. Would linux try to sync the 2 drives even though the disks are
basically empty? Would it sync even the empty sectors?
