RSC connection for an upgrade
|
|
|
Is the RSC port useful for doing OS upgrades ?
It would seem like it might be but the documentation says it relies
upon installed software so it is not clear what it would be running
on between OS versions.
I am trying to determine the best way to do a long distance upgrade.

Yes, it's excellent for that purpose. It only requires the installed
software for its initial configuration. Once that's done, you have a
remote console and remote administration.

Recently had a system that would not go multiuser. Would get to the
point of -
Hit ctrl-d or enter root passwd
The system became unresponsive. The o/s eventually had to be
reinstalled.
The system had a serial console and that was where the
errors/no-response was being seen. The system had an rsc card in it
but it wasn't configured with an IP. The system had to be reloaded
locally.
Isn't there a bootable cd of some sort to accomplish this ? We wanted
the system to be reloaded remotely.
It is also my understanding the IP info is held in firmware.
Any input would be appreciated. |

As far as I know, none of the Solaris CDs or DVDs have the RSC software
included in the boot image. That's what's required to configure the
RSC card. You could create your own, I suppose. You could also add it
to a network boot image. In either case, it has to be done in advance
of an incident that requires a remote console.
