O2 Webcam reliability
|
|
|
The O2 Webcam runs very hot, is it safe to run these all the time while
they are connected (even though they are not in use), or is it better to
disconnect them when not in use? |

I've kept mine on for years with no problem so far.

Touch the back. Does it get hot even though it's not being used?

I haven't got one anymore, but 5 remember perfectly that it was always
really hot, even when not in use. Anyway, it kept running fine from 1996
to 2002 without a glitch :)

Indeed, it runs very hot. IndyCams do not run so hot, but are larger. I was
really surprised the first time I touched one of these O2 devices.
Cheers,

O.K. Another question.
Is it safe to connect/disconnect a webcam from the O2 *while the machine
is running* ?
I have disconnected it, then reconnected and all was fine. Someone else
said they connected it after the machine had booted up (i.e. is hasn't
yet been recognised), and he said after a few seconds it was recognised
and all was well.
Is this a safe thing to do, or are we playing with fire?

I've done it a few times, however it's explicitly discouraged in the
hardware documentation.

Pardon me for asking,
but what do you do with those webcams? Do you have some cool apps like Yahoo Messenger, or ICQ, or iChat, on IRIX?

Yes, you have a nice videoconferencing app, I've forgotten the name at the
moment.

But as far as I know, it is not compatible with anything... hum... modern
;-)
Or is it ?
