Cheapest netbsd device?
|
|
|
What's the cheapest device I can buy that has ethernet, rs232 and will
run netbsd? It doesn't need a keyboard, screen, hard disk etc as long
as I can netboot it over ethernet. I just want to monitor a serial
port.
Thanks

Almost any still working crap pc with netbootable ethernet card you
can pick up for nothing at the pavement will do. If you're thinking a
linux-onnastick type device... shop around but you might need to port
netbsd yourself.

A SPARCstation 1 won't set you back much these days. Will run forever
though & runs NetBSD nicely.

HOw come noone suggest any fanless devices? Fanless devices are much |
cheaper in terms of physical cost and power consumption.

Any good old 486 Laptop will do for this. Plus it has a monitor built in.

Quite sure.

Soekris Engineering computers are not exactly the... cheapest devices...
but are not expensive at all, they have very low power requirements
(something between 5W and 10W) and provide a serial port, some 10/100
ethernet ports and USB (1.1) amongst others.
I am in no way related with this company, but I would certainly advice
about these small and not really expensive computers. Perhaps they will
support the requirements of the original poster:

http://www.kd85.com/
I am very happy with my net4801 and will buy more items from that
company in the future.
Cheers,
Igor. |

Oh, yes... these devices can be booted from a remote server as they
support PXE, or locally from either a Compact Flash or 2.5" HDD drive.
I feel it is an important issue for the original poster.
Best regards,
Igor. |

Here's another possibility I saw today:
http://www.arcom.com/pc104-geode-gx533.htm
\\
The SBC-GX533 is a low profile, fan-less, RoHS compliant EBX form
factor board, based on the AMD Geode GX 533@1.1W processor. It includes
all the standard PC interfaces as well as a full range of multimedia
features including onboard graphics which can drive a standard analog
display or a TFT flat panel, dual 10/100baseTx Ethernet, onboard
32Mbyte Flash drive, CompactFlash port, four USB ports, four serial
ports and an analog touchscreen interface.
//
Can't speak for certain about immediate NetBSD compatibility though.
