Blasphemy

I'm probably blaspheming here, but since IRIX and SGI
are...well...end-of-life'd, I was thinking of buying an SGI box and rigging
it out with stock ATX (or possibly BTX) parts, shoving Windows on it, and
devising a skin for Windows XP that matches CDE's widget set.
Other people have probably done similar stuff in the past, but SGI's cases
have a certain aesthetic appeal that cannot be matched by Apple, Alienware,
or Chieftec (and let's keep Dell out of this)
Any suggestions or inquisitions? |

Hello,
I've heard that the SGI Indigo (purple tower) is pretty easy to modify for
PC parts. Everything else is going to be a real challenge...

The Indigo2 should be fairly easy, maybe the Indy. Fuel would probably be the
easiest.
Any other system is going to require a lot of cutting and reengineering, to the
point where you might as well just start with a PC and dress it up to look like
an SGI, than to start with an SGI and try to wedge a PC inside.

I have a purple Indigo case that I'm slowly building a PC
into. (Which will run Linux - I've not sunk so low as to
run Windows yet )
The Indigo case is good and solid but you have to cut away
the central partition which is cramped and messy. The only
PC motherboards that will fit inside are the micro ATX
ones, so standard desktop or towers are out. There isn't
enough room to fit a horizontal CD/DVD drive either, only
vertical.
My first attempt at mounting components directly to the
Indigo frame failed. Now I've got a compact tower PC case
that disassembled without too much trouble and has a CD
vertical drive cage, so I plan to glue/bolt that inside
the Indigo.
A much easier alternative would be to find an SGI Visual
Workstation case and fit modern PC bits inside that. It
does have the squiggle logo instead of the cube though :-(
Good luck
cheers,
Hugh |
