does SGI have an own c compiler or must i use gcc (i would prefer not
to use it) ?

MipsPro C -- but I don't know if they still sell it.

Yes, they still sell it; but, even the "EDUCARE" licenses
are too expensive...

Well thats to much for me who would use it only for hobby reasons.

And with gcc as the only option i will not consider buying a second
hand fuel workstation anymore.

Well, there's always the ebay route... One can find MIPSPro compiler

sets on ebay for around $100, it's not too bad...

sets on ebay for around $100, it's not too bad...

You still have to buy the license though, right. OTOH, I think someone
posted some "guest" licenses here for several apps a few years ago and
they might still be valid so there's always that.

If you don't mind getting nagged every time it goes to compile a file,
it'll run without licenses, too.

MipsPro CC still runs and compiles things OK, it just displays a license

nag message every time it's invoked which you can safely ignore.
