alpha 164lx won't load srm after flash
|
|
|
I picked up 2 rack mount 164ls 533mhz Alphas yesterday for $40 a
piece at a local electronics/computer shop, but they came with ARC.
Since I planned to install FreeBSD on one and Gentoo on the other I got
v5.8 of the lx164srm.rom from DEC and flashed the first. All went well
and it brings up the SRM prompt now, but the other will only show a blue
screen with flashing cursor in the upper left. The machines are
identical and the same procedure was followed for both (picked
"AlphaBIOS Upgrade" while the floppy was in the drive).
Any ideas on what to do? Should standard procedure be to flash it
twice to make sure it went on there? It did pass the "Verify"
procedure... I found that the one that works would show the same
symptoms if hooked up to a "multimedia" keyboard instead of a generic
one and my AlphaServer 1200s are VERY picky about ram, but this is just
plain odd. I even tried to connect to the serial console, but nothing
(unless the procedure for doing such is any different from Sun or
Cisco). Any help is greatly appreciated.
I was about to post this to comp.sys.hp.hardware, but its apparently
a different "class" of people from similarly named
comp.sys.sun.hardware... if i should post this elsewhere, then please
advise. thanks again.

Have you tried to flash again with a known good battery?

Attach a console to COM1
My bet it is set to serial and not graphics
I assume you have a keyboard and mouse attached too?!?!
Could also be a bad keyboard/mouse port

i tried hooking my laptop to it with the same cable i use for my Cisco
and Sparc, but no luck on either port (they aren't labled). grasping at
straws here, but could the serial ports disabled some how? i'll try a
different cable.

yes, but i did notice that the one that works doesn't like my multimedia
keyboard (showed the same symptoms), but a standard generic one works
fine so that's what i have on it. i'll try another generic one as well...

the keyboard had to work to do the flash in the first place.
thanks.

the serial cable has a bad wire
when I hooked it back up to the Sparc and it didn't work, pulled it over
to the Alpha and it did. jiggled it a little and it stopped working.
that wasn't expected at all. thanks again for the responses.

Something is wrong with this country when a particular party
wants to make a BIG stink (no pun intended) about someone
putting panties on a prisoner's head when this is happening:
