And I thought this would be easy.

1. NetBSD would not install from CD. Failed right at the load of the
install kernel. Debian and Fedora Linux had no such problem. Poking
around on Google found something saying that the image was too large
for an IBM Thinkpad.

2. The generic floppies installed a relatively useless system. PCMCIA
plain old didn't work. Kernel said everything had a bogus CIS.

3. The laptop floppies worked beautifully.

This is being posted so the next person doesn't give up on NetBSD.

Since the vanilla install CD installer kernel lacks adjustments and
driver support for laptops... it worked nicely on a Thinkpad T23 for me,
but some notebooks are more equal than others.

That is why there are...

Space is limited with two floppy disks (iirc this will change for CD
installers in the next release), so the installer kernels cannot bring
_all_ drivers at once.

Thank you. :)

I don't think that's true; it works fine on more recent Thinkpads.
The 600E BIOS support for booting from CDROM is somehow odd. It may
be that the Debian and Fedora CDs are not using floppy emulation to
boot.

That's odd; PCMCIA used to work fine on my 600E.

man cardbus, and see the hint about rbus_min_start. On my 600E, this
was needed (2645-4AU). On a 600, no RBUS_MIN_START was needed, but I
did need a (close) IRQ PCIBIOS_INTR_FIXUP option - which is in
GENERIC_LAPTOP.

Also for a 600E you'll probably want to turn off acpi and use apm
(modify GENERIC_LAPTOP config and rebuild), and make sure your BIOS is
up to date.

True, it's IBMs firmware in this case.
