windows and lpd

I know this is something of a recurrent issue....
I'm trying to provide access to a printer via a netbsd box for an XP
laptop. This is because my old laptop (a Win2000 box) lost its screen
- but it can still print via the netbsd box, so I've tried to replicate
the setup exactly.
I believe I've done everything by the book, and a tcpdump shows that the
two machines are talking to each other. There are entries in both
hosts.lpd and hosts.equiv, there's a listening socket on port 515. I
imagine there's something going wrong to do with authentication, so what
I really want to do is capture the communication between the XP box and
the BSD box to see where it's failing. I end up trying to sort this
sort of thing out about every five years.
Can someone advise?

I suppose this is a private network? Try adding an entry to
"/etc/hosts" for the new laptop. IIRC, "tcpdump" will show the
error message from the NetBSD "lpd" that you won't be able to see
any other way -- but odds are it's going to be something like
"hostname for your address unknown" (in other words, add an entry
to "/etc/hosts").
