SGI Indigo 2 - advice sought
|
|
|
Hi,
I was recently given one of these, it seems to be working and I can get the
diagnostic menu up but it is missing a CD drive.
Could somebody advise me as to what might be suitable as it seems to be
neith IDE nor SCSI connection.
All the best,

It is SCSI (and you need a 5¼ tray), e.g. a Plextor should be OK. You
may also use an external CDROM.

Hi, thanks.
I'll dig out an old SCSI one and my box of assorted leads and see what I can
do. I only need it to get IRIX installed so I'll do it with the box open
and do without a tray.
All the best,

Hm, without the drivebay it would be complicated but you can install via
network <http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/netboot.html>

If you have an external SCSI box with a drive, there is a 50-pin high
density connector on the back of your I2. More convenient to connect
that way.
Enjoy it. I was given three O2 systems in the last week, along with a
pile of documentation and software. More toys... :-)

Poetic justice.
A worthwhile endeavour:

Don't you need at drive that supports 512 bytes sectors in order
to be able to boot from it?

Plextor does (there is a jumper to switch from 2048 to 512), some
Toshibas also do (even without jumper).

one may as well use a Toshiba SCSI DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM drive.
The first are cheap at ebay, the latter have its advantages
if you wish to backup data from time to time, since DVD-RAM
does a verify-on-write.
AFAIK, jumper should be for 512bytes/sector SCSI ID4 to boot.

Thanks folks, think I might know where there's a Toshiba SCSI CD drive, I'll
try that.
I only got the box because it was free and I thought it might be interesting
to play with so if possible I don't really want to spend any money on it.
I have a copy of IRIX but no apps so once it's running I'll probably see if
anybody wants to trade me something for it. It comes complete with a big
Sony screen and original keyboard, works fine with ps2 mouse.
I'm not interested in selling for cash but if you want it let me know what
you've got to trade, I'm looking for stuff to build a quiet server box.
Will probably need collecting from Hampshire UK.
OT: I've also got an IBM eServer x240 to trade, dual P3-1GHx, RAID etc.
All the best,
Alan |

Appart from using IRIX and its applications (try out pkgsrc.org on IRIX!),
even burning CDs using freeware.sgi.com cdrecord on some Plextor CD writer,
eventually plugging a flat screen (Sync On Green capable) with a VGA => 13W3
SGI converter, etc. ; you may, depending on what model of I^2 you have,
install NetBSD/sgimips. http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/sgimips/ |

You can also upgrade the RAM beyond the official advices. I imported 512MB
sets IIRC, from US ebay to France |
