Do you have access to another SGI machine? If so mount the disk in that
and edit the passwd file.
I diden''t have an extra sgi and the xfs version that was on the disk
wasen't supported by linux.
So i generated a new SALT using htpass on my linux box and using a
hexeditor i edited /dev/sdb and searched for all occurances of "root:"
and replaced the old SALT with the one i had generated.

Hi!
Unfortunalty I got only this Maschine.
I googled around and found tips with single user access, but that
didn't work either because the maschine want's to have the root
Password again. |

Do you have installation media? Boot a mini root and from there you have
access to the hard disk (it is a little bit tricky but there is a lot of
documentation on <http://techpubs.sgi.com/> how to set up mini root and
how to get access to the HD
Google found following ("IRIX lost password"):
http://docs.rinet.ru/UNIXi/ch33.htm, search for "How do I circumvent the
root password?"

Hi!
Thanks for answering. I think I must get an external CD-Drive, because
my octane has only a tape drive.
Can I get an OS-CD somewhere? Perhaps from SGI?

Probably not anymore from SGI...
Maybe the best wat is buying a set on E-bay, or asking a friend for a
copy :-)
Or maybe use a Linux version that runs on it (and supports your
filesystemn normally xfs) to boot into a minimal environment and then
reset the password.
Othewise you could also try putting the disk in a machine that knows
about xfs and reset the password file.

Google has a bunch of links about these issues, but installation CD's
are the best and easiest soltution... |

Just good news!
I found another Octane with my old settings. Now, or better later at
daylight I will change the passwd file.
Is there anything I must be aware of when i change it? Can I use the
vi-Editor?
Good night Google-Groups, where ever you are...

THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I got it. The Octane is running an d I can get in my root account.
after resetting the wrong file in the second maschine , though I must
kill myself because I could login in the second maschine, but I booted
in the Single user mode changed the password for this maschine booted
again, and then after mounting the Harddisk of the first maschine I
copied the password entries of the running maschine. (HÄ?)
In short, I can login all of my maschines again as root.
Thank you guys.
