The version of xntp I use was installed from the freeware distribution. It
is started by the script /etc/init.d/ntp. It uses chkconfig ntp to decide
if you want to start it or not, then uses the options specified in
/etc/config/ntp.options, which for me are:
cow 3# cat /etc/config/ntp.options
-b -c /etc/ntp.conf -f /usr/freeware/etc/ntp.drift
So ultimately it is looking in the /etc/ntp.conf file, which has a
line pointing to the ntp server on my network, and a line for the drift
file:
cow 4# cat /etc/ntp.conf
driftfile /usr/freeware/etc/ntp.drift
server chicken
The corresponding setup on my ntp server machine points to some external
ntp hosts, whose names I found after reading the man pages.
I suggest you boot up single user, and (assuming your setup is similar to
mine) chkconfig ntp off. Then attempt to start xntpd manually.
