By ``in-depth'' I think of ``how to write one'', but your ``exempla
gratia'' seems to imply an ``in-depth'' without too much computer
code; though, this is comp.unix.internals and you chose to post here,
so I am clueless on exactly what you're looking for. I don't recommend
anything, I don't know what's good for you. In case you're looking for
how to use a UNIX system, you could skip straight to (5).

(1) ``Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment'' will show you a
lot of details of how UNIX works from the perspective of a programmer
who wants to write software which will run on UNIX. The last chapters
of the book, for example, implement softwares entirely --- I value a
lot such exposition.

(2) ``Operating Systems, Design and Implementation'' describes the
design and implementation of the MINIX system; you can see most of the
source code, and it is very detailed --- I value this.

(3) ``The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System''
describes the version 4.4 of the BSD operating system.

(4) ``The Design of the UNIX Operating System'' discusses System V
Release 2. It doesn't show source code --- it couldn't, that is (or
was) AT&T property ---, but it shows data structures used by the
system, it shows algorithms.

If you want to learn how to use UNIX, then I believe that there are
many ones which will serve you well. The last one that I've have seen
is called (5) ``UNIX for the Impatient.'' It is detailed on UNIX
usage; the table of contents is very detailed; that's nice to look up
something that you'd like to read about.

Here's a list of the ones I mentioned:

Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment,
W. Richard Stevens
QA76.76.O63 S754

Operating Systems, Design and Implementation,
Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Albert S. Woodhull
QA76.76.O63T36

The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System,
M. K. McKusick, S. J. Leffler, M. J. Karels, J. S. Quaterman
QA76.76.O63 D4743

The Design of the UNIX Operating System,
M. J. Bach
QA76.76.O63 B33

UNIX for the Impatient,
Paul W. Abrahams, Bruce A. Larson
QA76.76.O63A27

The code on each book can be useful if you have access to a library in
the United States; I believe these are unique ids.
