Basic networking trouble, need a push in the rigth direction!
|
|
|
Hi,
New to solairs and pretty much new to linux, I know basic commands
(i.e. mkdir, chmod etc, cp, ls etc).
I recently installed the new Solaris 10 (redhat didnt support my SATA
HD) and it is all working fine, its good.
However, I can not for the life of me figure out solaris networking or
even any intro to solaris networking.
So my first question is, could anyone point me to a descent tutorial
that goes from scratch, not even sure if my network card was recognised
or not (its integrated onto the motherboard so I assume so).
My networking situation. Windows XP machine (up to date) with a ADSL
connection to the internet (shared to rest of house). This PC is
connected to a switch, which links to 4 windows XP PC's and 1 Linux PC.
Internet sharing and networking (i.e. folder sharing) works fine on all
PC's. So my solaris PC just needs to sit on the network in the same
way and be able to access the shared internet connection and other
computers.
I tried looking around all the GUI config files, the only thing I could
find was a proxy config (I dont have a proxy server, do I?) and this
network config icon/app - which IU though would do it, but step 1 asks
for DNS stuff ports etc and they just dont exist!
I can ping my local machine, 127.0.0.1 but other PC's are unreachable.
The IP of the server is a normal windows 192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask
of 255.255.255.0 I think (need to check that one)
PC a reasnobly high spec PC. The network card is an integrated one with
my ASUS motherboard (P4800 deluxe or something I think, memories going)
My solaris installation is fresh - I heard something about IP config
that may be important, not sure though about the status on my solaris
pc.
Really it would be great if someone could point me in a direction to
solving this problem, searched google and have found nothing useful,
just tid bits. I will keep searching though.
Thanks for any help, it will be much appreciated!

try ifconfig -a and see if anything is returned. I have lo0 and elxl0.
lo0 is the loopback device, so elxl0 must be the built-in network
interface. This same interface is detected as eth0 under linux.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Did that and it returned:-
lo0: flags ....
inet 127.0.0.1....
Thats all.
So from that I take it my network card is not installed / does not have
any drivers on the solaris installation, doh.
My NIC is a Marvell Yukon Gigabit Eth 10/100/1000Base T Adapter - part.
May have a spare cheap Netgear one lying around, I'll be suprised if
that has no drivers. Need to search the internet now but havent got
much hope! I'll stick the cheap one in and give it a go if I cant.
Thanks again, Jon |

Go to www.SysKonnect.de and download the skge driver for Solaris; depending
on the pci ids you may need to add a driver alias more, but the card
should work (albeit in 32 bit mode only, for now)
