freeBSD installation problems...
|
|
|
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem I'm having.
I'm trying to install freebsd on a seperate partion on a system already
running windows xp. I have the installation CD's for the current
release of freebsd andeverything goes fine until the actual
installation starts. I get an error about my CD-ROM not working. It
boots from the CD fine, but doesn't get past the beginning of
installation. I tried installing from a DOS partition but the
installation program keeps telling me there are no existing primary dos
partitions, so this is not an option. Is there a way I can create a
partition with the installation files so that the freebsd installation
will recognize it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

If you have a decent bandwidth you might as well go for an FTP install. It
will take longer than a CD install, but it _will_ work. Alternatively, if
you have a spare computer, set up a local FTP or NFS server.
And of course, did you try other CD-ROM drives or to burn another set of
CDs? And for your DOS partition, are you sure you made it primary? And what
tools did you use to create the partition and copy the installation
packages? |

If you mean the MS-DOS/Win95/Win98/WinME fdisk then this most likely created
a logical partition. If you have Windows 2000 or XP it is easy to create and
format a primary FAT partition on your drive using Disk Management (run
'diskmgmt.smc'). If a DOS-based OS is your only option then you need a
better partitioning tool than fdisk. I recommend http://www.ranish.com/part/
which is free and works just fine. Put it on an MS-DOS/Win9x boot disk and
run it from there.

I'm not sure how an ftp install is done exactly.

This is not harder than CD-based install. Choose FTP, select a mirror
(preferably one that is relatively close to you geographically), and away
you go. I recommend trying. |

It was the second set of CDs, reburning was the first thing I tried.

Going to retry the partioning and installing from there. If that
doesn't work I'll try the ftp option. Thanks for the help, I'll report
back in a bit.

Thanks a bunch! I didn't format the drive to FAT and the installer
didn't recognize it, so I redid it and it went through perfectly. I
must admit though, booting it to it was quite frightening, never used
anything other than windows before. Anyway.. Thanks again!
