4 CD set
|
|
|
Since moving from 5.1 to 5.3 it appears applications like Gimp, xmms,
koffice etc have gone from 4 CD set.
Yea I did download same via 56k and a few extras like Abiword via ADSL
at work the home via mem. key.
Cut down kde, gnome are fine but why drop many commonly used apps from
CD set??
Whilst I don't actually use kde or gnome I've usually had kde + koffice
aboard to import word docs people send me...
Personally I can't justify paying ADSL rates for what I do on the www
Now hardly worth buying the 4 CD set.
Is some new policy in place???

You'll have to ask the people who publish the 4 CD set... the FreeBSD
Project only releases a mini install CD and disks 1 and 2.
Probably you'd find more packages available if you bought the DVD.

What "4 CD set" did you download? FreeBSD.org doesn't produce one.
If you're talking about the 2 CD set (+ 2 cut-down installation
disks), then the only packages are on disc 1, and the ~700MB ISO size
severely restricts the number of packages that can be installed, and
there is essentially *no space* to include anything else than what is
already there.

Lehmann's (http://www.lob.de) produces a DVD with some 9000 packages.
Unfortunately, it many only be available in Germany/Europe, unless
someone is distributing it also in the USA.
The DVD costs only 15 Euros, that's about 20 USD.
FreeBSDmall.com also sells a DVD (which is probably similar), but for
~60 USD.

You can download neither of the two ;-)

probably bigger as well.
Set is Australian from: http://www.lsl.com.au/
I buy the CD's rather than downloading the images that's all...

OK, you'll have to ask them then, since they have nothing to do with
freebsd.org except taking what we produce and adding stuff :)

Not really worried about finding an alternate set. |
Just wondered why they dropped popular apps. instead of a lot of
smaller/ older stuff!
Live in Australia tho CD set is I think same as US
Tried a 5.1 DVD and no luck reading it om my NEC DVD/writer thingy
Many small production/ Home burned DVD's
Same problem at work many DVD's don't read well in many different PC's
= cheap atapi drives Igues but then who can afford scsi same nec drive
is 3x the price

Maybe they just add but in the past they've been the same as the (once?) |
official Oak Creek set which isn't always available in Australia
4.1 (oak ck), 4.6. 4.7. 4.9, 5.1, 5.3 are all arranged the same way:
Install, extra packages 1, extra packages 2, live File system
The CD set does bear the daemon logo and c. right stuff thereby presume
they do contribute to the cause and that they simply burn the 2
'official' iso's here..
ADSL here is currently limited to around 4Km (2 miles) from the
telephone exchange. Tho I'd be able for it many are not.
Does downloading the iso's contribute more?
Anyway not bothered I can always download the extra stuff at work.
Enogh of my waffle
