well, its a bit difficult when all the factors involved with buying a PC
that will have very limited upgrade capability and cost ~1500 bucks.
desktops are easy, build your own. i'm pretty much set on the AMD64
processor, but i haven't found a laptop with same and 17" screen. then
again, a screen that size might be too much of a good thing. i use a 19"
flatpanel at home, but a 17" laptop sounds like it might be overkill. i
definitly don't want anything smaller than 15.4" and i'm not a gamer.

Depending on the resolution, a screen can NEVER be too big. I would LOVE
a 100" in front of me with a resolution of say a LOT. (too lazy to
calculate it back to my 19" 1600x1200 monitor)

The next two I will probably buy are these puppies:

hmm, and it costs as much as my 17" monitors did 2 years ago... templting...
very tempting, the oldest one is getting a little dim... smack smack smack,
nope, still not dead... guess I'll have to wait a little longer ;-)

.... but not make by them. i have a 19 dell but it's
not a dell - i forget who makes it = viewsonic?

anyway, dell claims to be the #1 supplier of flat panel displays!

My 17" is now about 7 years and was even then second hand. I also have a
19" that I use as a main monitor. That one runs 1600x1200. At work (Yes,
I have a temp job again) they use 1024x768 and I just seem to not get
enough info from that.

Also I am now spoiled by using 2 screens, so if I buy something now, it
will be two 1600x1200 flatscreens. As they are only available as 20",
that will have to do. If they would have 18" that do 1600x1200, I would
take those, as that would be the same as I have now in reality.

rather watch a bunch of sweaty guys jumping all over eachother,
than, say fashion TV - where hot models walk down the runway.

I don't understand the desktop panels, a lot of notebooks now come with
15.4" screens which are 1600 or 1900 x n resolution... Why are the desktops
all still comparitively "low res"? A 17" or 19" panel of 1900x1400 or
whatever would suit me down to the ground.

Read a review of the new Dell 20" wide screen panel, that looked
interesting... If only it wasn't from Dell ;-P

Indeed. Me too. I would also think that the 20.1" I would buy would give
me 1600x1200, bust still will give less info per sqare inch. That would
mean a less nicer looking experience.

18" flatscreen would be ideal with 1600x1200, or even better a real
widescreen that is as large as 3200x1200 but as a whole one single
screen.

Take a look at the 30" Mac Cinema display, but that requires a graphics card
with dual DVI outputs, they are like hens teeth at the moment...

IBM also have a very high definition display.

Another thing I've noticed with Windows laptops with the very high-res
displays is, once you get the high resolution, it switched to "jumbo"
fonts, making them much larger, which robs you of the extra space you've
gained...
