Tecra 8100 Laptop
|
|
|
I am trying to get a Laptop (Toshiba Tecra 8100) working with SuSE 9.1.
Everything works except sound.
I have checked (google, etc.) and can not find any working configurations
with SuSE, well with RedHat. Have tried all of the hints given on the
Toshiba site and none work.
However KNOPPIX works perfectly (everything!). Before I throw KNOPPIX onto
the hard disc, has anyone got this laptop working with SuSE 9.1 (or later
or earlier) for sound.

I belive the Tecra 8000 used a Yamaha opl3 like sound card. I got it
working with various levels of SUSE 8.x (up to 8.2) by running the alsaconf
tool and telling it it had the Yamahah chip.
Can't say for sure about the 8100 though. |

I have an 8000 at work and it does have an opl I think....seems like
very thing including the pcmcia netowrk car is working on that one with
Suse 9.1 personal. Will check on the sound tomorrow just to make sure.

The laptop uses the Yamaha chip and SuSE 9.1 finds the correct drivers etc. |
But the "sound" coming out of it is static only. There is no instability so
I assume it has the correct address etc.
I have sniffed around looking for fixes and simply can't find anything. I'll
probably throw Debian at it. Knoppix is based on that and it works. Can't
find anyone that has got SuSE to work on this one (Tecra 8100). Note that
all of the other appear to work no problem. Just the Tecra 8100. Would
appear to be something with the power saving.
I get these laptops for nothing so I am always curious to see what I can do
with them. This is the first one (Toshiba) that I have had problems with. |

Try adding 'acpi=off' to the boot options. First try it on a reboot and
add it in the edit box on the first screen; just start typing and you
should see it appear in that box (no quotes, of course). If that works,
add it to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file . . .
ACPI is buggy on some BIOSes -- flashing to the latest BIOS version for
your motherboard sometimes works, too.
