I am looking forward to buying a decent webcam to use under Linux. (I
am running SuSE 9.2 on the desktop currently.)

Can anyone recommend an easy-to-install webcam?

The choice does not seem to be very easy, it seems to be much easier
for printers and scanners (which sounds very much like "Go for Epson!
Period."). :-(

I have done an extensive research yesterday (15 Feb 2005) and have
found a nice page which lists a lot of supported webcams and their
respective output quality(!) under Linux: *wow!*

* http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Another page which might be very much interesting:
The Linux Incompatipility List (Webcams)

* http://leenooks.com/14

Beware, by the way, of Philips chip based webcams: Support for those
cams is very much likely to be discontinued in the new kernel:

* http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/
* http://www.pro-linux.de/news/2004/7210.html (German)
* http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/50450 (German)

Resources about other drivers and working webcams:

* http://zc0302.sourceforge.net/zc0302.php (Mustek WCAM300A and
others)
* http://www.royale.zerezo.com/zr364xx/
* http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat.php?w=d&id=55

If anybody successfully using an easy-to-install webcam under Linux
would share his or her experience with us I would greatly appreaciate
that!

Cheers, Peter

I have a logitech quickcam express which came with my old compaq 7470
working with linux. My understanding is that the whold webcam thing is a
crapshoot. Sometimes the vendors change chipsets in the middle of a model
run. If this is not true, please correct me. I will check your links as
time permits.

Fair warning, the spca5XX driver listed at sourceforge is not as
capable as the one listed at: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
I have tried them both.

A whole bunch of cheapo webcams are supported by the spca50x driver, but
my personal favourite is

Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000

Uses the Philips based PWC module, in the late versions of the 2.6 series
kernel.

Cheers

Tim

Tim,

But the site http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ states that Philips
based chips are VERY UNLIKELY to be supported in the future (i.e. in
new kernels).

This could mean that for the next couple of months, maybe for the next
2 or 3 years using your Logitech webcam is no problem, as soon as you
upgrade to a new kernel you're in trouble though, won't it?

SuSE users are probably most likely to be hit by this problem very
early since SuSE (according to my impression) tries to go for the
latest stable kernel in each new release.

Isn't there a webcam where hardware support is not going to suck in
the future?

There are two drivers for the Philips cameras, one of which is

discontinued (the one your article is about I suspect) and the new
one which gets around the issues the old one had and IS likely to
be maintained with new kernels.
