My pc has a 1xAGP slot. There's no 1xAGP card on market, only 2x or 4x.
can I use 2x or 4x AGP card on 1xAGP slot?
Thank you for help.

I most often find the answer is no. The 1x AGP conforms to an
earlier AGP specification (usually). I'm going to say no... but
I welcome anyone who can give evidence to the contrary.

What board is it? Might help in giving a good answer.

Depends on the card, the board, and the interactions between them. IME,
newer boards don't like AGP cards that only run at 2x. If your
motherboard has a 1x AGP slot, it's probably *really* old, like
pre-2000, so you might want to ask "Should I buy a new motherboard?" Or
you can buy a PCI graphics card; most cards are available in PCI
versions as well as AGP.

Your motherboard with 1x AGP gives 3.3 V to the card. I haven't tried this
myself, but I think that an AGP 2x card would still fit into your
motherboard. Different AGP cards have different keying so you are not
supposed to be able to insert a card with the wrong voltage.

There is some information about this at
http://www.ertyu.org/~steven_nikkel/agpcompatibility.html

AFAIK, yes. As far as I'm aware, all 2x and 4x video cards
are backwards compatible with the original AGP slots.
Most 8x cards will not physically even fit in an original
AGP slot--this is a safety feature because of different
voltages.

Going the other way, the AGP slot on most newer mobos can
only handle 2x or greater. Old 1x AGP video cards won't
even physically fit in a newer mobo. Again, this is a
safety feature because of different voltages. I believe
this is what most of the other posters in this thread are
thinking of.

The AGP speed should be no problem, but there are typically voltage
problems and maybe others. Ideally you can't put a card into a board
with the wrong voltage, but at least in the other direction there have
been problems (with improperly-built 5V RivaTNT cards fitting in 3.3V
AGP slots and destroying the motherboard), so be cautious.

I would go for a graphics card from arount the time of the board,
maybe a Voodoo 3 (of which I have very pleasant memories).

Followups to colh.

Huh... no. Certainly not the case. While there were some
early 2x and a few (I guess) 4x boards that were compatible
with the early AGP spec, I'd say that most will probably
NOT work. However, certainly post the cards that you know
will work in the very old AGP 1x slots.

There are some 4x boards that won't even work with the
2nd gen 2x AGP spec.

YMMV

I don't remember the exact models, but within the last year
I bought a Sapphire Radeon 7000 and an MSI nVIDIA GeForce
MX4000 that worked fine with my old slot 1 motherboard with
AGP 1x slot.

Or maybe my old motherboard has an AGP 2x slot and I just
don't know it? It doesn't have the flippy "L" locking
thing, and the placement of the segmentation wall within
the slot itself is in the old fashioned location. Before,
I had been using an old Radeon 7200, and before that an
Ati Rage128. Due to the lack of the "L" notch and the
placement of the connector notch, this Ati Rage128 won't
even fit in my newer mobos. It fit and worked just fine
in my old slot 1 mobo, of course.

There are two types of AGP slot. They are keyed differently. Some cards have
two slots, some only have the front or rear cut out. The other problem is that
just because you find a card that fits, it may be the wrong voltage.

My recommendations are as follows:

for a 1x AGP slot, use a 3dfx Voodoo card.
For a 4x AGP or above, use an ATI Radeon 9000.

Both of these cards work with the open source drivers provided with the Kernel.

Regards,

Mark.

Even DRI is supported for anything up to a Radeon 9250. They're
cheap, and work great for low-medium demand 3D stuff. Probably
not enough oomph to play Doom3, but tuxracer works fine.

I haved played Wolfenstein Enemy Territory on Linux using both of these cards.
