Soundblaster live on FC3 AMD64
|
|
|
Hello
I have been trying to build linux on an AMD64 system for some time now. And
I now can't get the soundcard working, and I wonder if anybody has any tips.
My main beef was that I couldn't get ANY distribution to work with the
motherboard's on-board graphics chipset, a VIA K8M800 northbridge, after
searching on the internet I found umpteen blogs of problems with this
configuration so I was slightly put off. I did notice that when the
installer did its 'sound test' the sound card (onboard AC97 VIA K8T800
southbridge) worked.
I got a new nvidia gforce fx5200 graphics card in the hope that it would
solve the eternal 'no screens found / none have a usable configuration'
error, and it did, perfectly - no distributions had any problems running the
graphical installer, and started the X-server with no problems at all. The
animation was patchy as it was obviously running the graphics card off the
processor, but once the drivers were installed it was fine. However, this
rendered the sound card not working. However this required me setting the
'first init display' in bios to the AGP, which the nVidia is plugged into.
I thus assumed that this newfound lack of sound was because the motherboard
can either use *both* the onboard graphics and sound, or neither - and the
fact that I disabled one had meant that the other wouldn't work either, so I
went out and got a Soundblaster Live soundcard and plugged it into the PCI
slot. Logical assumption, or completely silly move? When I loaded FC2, it
listed my AC97 onboard sound card as 'configured' but it didn't work, and
the Soundblaster that I bought was recognized, but 'not configured'.
Now I searched on the internet for distributions that had the EMU10K1 module
which supports the soundblaster. Gentoo claimed to be one, but it has a
notoriously difficult 'manual' installer and while I'm enjoying doing it as
it's teaching me about what actually goes on in the installation process I
can't help wondering what distributions should work with my configuration,
i.e. AMD64, nVidia GForce FX5200, Soundblaster Live soundcard and whether
Fedora ever could have been got to work.
Anyone else have this configuration, any comments?
p.s. Although I'm increasingly liking linux I'm coming from a windows
background primarily and still on the steep part of the linux learning curve
so please explain what to you may seem obvious! |

.... why not try a live cd or two, such as knoppix, just
to check on the hardware end of things. i wouldnt
recommend FC unless you're prepared to fiddle.
on the sound front, you didnt mention "which sound" you're
not getting. some people dont get sound while running the
CD player - this is sometimes due to the fact that the
sound wire is missing, which goes from the CD player out
to the sound card [cd] in plug.
you might also bring up the mixer and ensure that the
various channels arent muted and the volume levels are
not set to 'off'

AFAIK, all current distros support the Sound Blaster Live.
You should be aware that there are two different drivers for the EMU10K1
chip: there's the emu10k1 module (based on work from Creative and part
of the OSS sound drivers) and the snd-emu10k1 module (part of the ALSA
drivers which are included in 2.6.x kernels and available as add-on
packages for 2.4.x kernels). The two different drivers support
different sub-sets of the card's features. Pick the one that best suits
your needs. But more importantly, don't get the instructions for the
different drivers mixed up. If you start following instructions for the
OSS driver and then find another site with ALSA instructions... things
may not go so well. |

I too faced similar problem but with SB Live 24 Bit on an Intel.
You should go to ALSA webpage and download the latest drivers,
utilities, tools, etc.
Follow the instructions and reboot your comp. Kudzu should be able to
detect your hardware.
For more info, visit this website:

Hope this helps.

Rather the latter. I have yet to see a board where the on-board
components cannot be disabled independently (if they can be disabled).
What does lspci say? What does lsmod say? Do you see the AC97 driver
in the dmesg output?
Maybe you just got the output muted for some unrelated reason. Play
around with the mixer and turn everything up; use alsamixer if you use
ALSA; OSS mixers like aumix did not make all controls available for my
soundcard (an SB Audigy).
For the SB Live, it's basically the same thing as for the built-in
card: is the hardware enabled, are the drivers there, is the mixer set
correctly?
Oh, and is the cable plugged into the right plug?

Well, I have Fedora Core 1 working with an AMD64, various graphics

No, but it does work, only not after I install the nVidia driver.
I don't think it's recognising the SBLive, as when I go to System tools >
soundcard detection, (with the AC97 audio) I get no soundcards, and when the
AC97 is enabled, I only get that - only it doesn't work after the nVidia
driver install.

I had the same problem (but on Intel platform) with FC3. There was no
way of configuring my on-board soundcard (CMI Media), so I put an old
SBLive PCI card in my brand new PC. Initially I compiled the ALSA
drivers into the kernel . That didn't work. Then I switched to OSS
drivers and voila... it worked like a charm...

I've got slightly further with it, I've downloaded and compiled and
installed the latest version of alsa driver from their ftp link on their
website, and the soundcard is now listed as an Audigy LS (despite the fact
that it is a Soundblaster Live 24bit)
in soundcard detection, but doesn't play sound. It lists the driver of this
to be 'snd-ca0106', not emu10k1.
Maybe this is the problem?
When I run alsamixer, it has got the title of the VIA soundcard (the one I
don't want to use ) at the top and no way of changing it.

Now that's a tough job... Welcome to Linux. I suggest you learn it all
by yourself, because situations like these occur quite often so you're
gonna need it. Just go to google and type something like compiling Linux
kernel and you'll have lot's of tutorials thrown out. And I also suggest
you to buy yourself a decent book about Linux. I recommend
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/learnredhatentlnx/index.html. It's a great
book if you're new to Linux and are using Fedora.
Karlo.

not sure why this is, as it's not an Audigy it's a Soundblaster Live.

There may be little or no difference at the chipset level. Looks
good.

Looks good. Not sure about the exact details, though (I cannot
cokmpare it the the corresponding stuff at my home machine in the near
future).

in the dmesg output?
No, but it does work, only not after I install the nVidia driver.
I don't think it's recognising the SBLive, as when I go to System tools
soundcard detection, (with the AC97 audio) I get no soundcards, and when the
AC97 is enabled, I only get that - only it doesn't work after the nVidia
driver install.
|
BTW, why do you install the Nvidia driver? Anything wrong with
deinstalling them and using the free nv driver with X?

Have you tried the -c or -D options of alsamixer? You might also want
to disabkle the on-board sound in the BIOS.

Because the animation is so much better - when I play tux racer without the
nvidia driver installed, it works, but refreshes about every 0.5 - 1.0
seconds, very patchy. With the nVidia driver installed, it's perfect
animation.
I've got the soundcard working now, but it's crackly! The frustrating thing
is I think this is because I've got the alsa mixer levels set incorrectly or
I'm using analogue incorrectly or something but no way of knowing for sure!
Enter these forums...
I might try going for disabling the VIA onboard sound as I haven't done that
since the SBLive24 started working and see what that does.
Anyway cheers for the responses
(Hope this gets through, it might take a while)
