How do I get the firmware for my hardware?
|
|
|
I have a Genius ColorPage-Vivid 4 (USB) scanner that has never worked
under Linux or given any signs of being visible to it. I recently
installed MDK 10.1 CE, and now xcanimage gives me this error on stderr
when run from the command line:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[gt68xx] Couldn't open firmware file (neither
`/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/ccd68861.fw' nor
`/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/ccd68861.fw'): No such file or directory
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition, it gives me the following error in a dialog box:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Failed to open device 'gt68xx:libusb:001:002': Invalid argument.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, I suppose that the solution is to get the firmware file from the
Windows driver (which I have) and copying it to the
/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/ccd68861.fw file. But there is no shuch file in
Windows. I shearched for ccd* and for gt68*. I did found a file named
ccdecode.sys in c:\windows\system32, is that it? I am afraid that
trying some random file directly on my scanner might damage it.
So, where is that firmware file and how do I get it from there?

An .exe from c:\windows\system32 is almost certainly *not* your firmware.

Have you read the SANE website for info on that driver and firmware?

Well, I do not think that that file is the firmware. I was just
reporting what I found.
Oops, sorry John, thank you for pointing this out to me. I did now, but
still cannot find it. This is what I have done. I remembered reading
about firmware for all kinds of devices (scanners, digital cameras, CD
Recorders, CD-ROMs, disk drives, memory sticks, printers, PDAs, Atari
2600s, etc) that I didn't think that the problem was related or
specific to scanners, so I din't think about checking the SANE docs.
I started with the URLs John provided me. Reading throught that same
page it says that my particularscanner works without problem (go to
the top of the page and search for "Colorpage Vivid4"). Good. It gives
me a list of things to do to look for the firmware (I looked for "ccd*"
and "gt68*"):
1) Check the XP drivers CD.
No such files there. I searched here before I requested for help,
anyway.
2) Download a new driver and search there.
Did twice.
3) Look in Windows partition.
Did dis actually before my request for help.
4) Try Wine or CodeWeavers.
No, I haven't tried this. Every time I have tried Wine for anything
before it failed.
Still, the firmware is nowhere to be found.
Thank you. |

I don't have that scanner but this got me interested and I just had
aquick look at the driver I downloded from
http://www.driverscollection.com/gf.php?file_id=2011&sid=949917520
after unzipping the archive I looked arround a bit and found this:
porcupine:~/tmp$ strings setup.pkg
USB6816
scndrvu.drv
SCANDRV.DLL
CCD68861.fw
TWAIN_32
TWAIN_32.ds
TWAIN_32.rdl
[...]
So I guess your file is called "CCD68861.fw" and is hiding somewhere on your
disk maybe your search was case sensitive?

Thanks Phillipp!
Case Sensitivity! I can't beleive I got bitten by the oldest trick in
the bag! Tell you one thing, I 'll never again forget for use "egrep -i
$GLOB" or "find $FILE_PATH -iname $GLOB" when looking for Windows
files.
Once again, thanks.
