Unlike the original Playstation (PS-X, PS1, PSOne) or Playstation2 (PS2
and newer PSX) or PSP (the new portable)
which used graphics chips designed by Sony / SCEI or mainly by Sony / SCEI,
the Playstation3 (PS3) graphics are being designed by NVIDIA, or mainly by
NVIDIA. --and we all know that the lions-share of NVIDIA's engineering
talent, technology, IP, patents, etc. came from Silicon Graphics Inc (SGI).
even the 3Dfx+GigaPixel acquisitions made by NVIDIA some 4 1/2 years ago
which boosted their engineering capability significantly, was ultimately,
rooted in SGI. thus, Playstation3 will be the first Playstation that
has an significant, confirmed, trace-able amount of SGI technology in it.

(that's mainly why I'm putting this on the SGI groups)

according to PSM / Playstation Magazine,

the current, non-final Playstation3 development kits are using twin GeForce
6800 Ultras, in SLI. but even this does not scratch the surface of what the
final Playstation3 will be able to do graphically, with its completed, final
GPU, which is still being worked on by Nvidia (and Sony).

now here is the exact quote from the Gaming-Age and Beyond3D message boards,
which themselves are meant to have been quoted directly from PSM /
Playstation Magazine

Quote:

"One of the next-generation Playstation project from the begining has been
computing giant IBM. They helped co-design the system's integral Cell CPU
with SCEI, but as PSM has learned from development sources, their involvment
is extending way past the deal.

In fact the lastest version of the Playstation 3 development kit, as of this
writing, is built around a custom Cell-based PC created by engineers at IBM.
The system has a single Cell processor rather than multiple G5 chips some
have specualated it would, and runs a custom Linux-based operating system
designed by Sony Computer Entertainment and mention at last E3.

At present, the kit has two top-of-the-line NVIDIA graphics cards running in
tandem (SLI) and even then, one source tells us it's "not even scratching
the surface of what PS3 will be able to do visually.

I'd expect Playstation3 with its Nvidia graphics that are rooted in SGI
tech, to far surpass SGI's old 1990s InfiniteReality series of visualization
systems. at least when processing SMALL data sets.

I don't however, expect PS3 to even come close to SGI's modern Onyx4
UltimateVision visualization systems......
....well, perhaps the lower-end models that use 2-4 ATI graphic processors,
but certainly not the highend UltimateVision systems that use 16 to 32 ATI
chips.
