handheld recommendations
|
|
|
I'm a relative newcomer to *BSD, though not to Linux (I've been running
Linux for over 10 years), and I've been using FreeBSD for a couple of
months on a desktop machine (i386 platform).
I've now decided it might be fun and educational to run NetBSD on a
mobile device. I've looked at <http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcsh/> and
<http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcarm/>.
I'm interested in any recommendations as to a good mobile (i.e. handheld)
platform on which to run NetBSD. I'm thinking that the HP Jornada 720
or 680 might be suitable (and within my price range).
Are there any good reasons to favour one over the other of the above?
Any other recommendations?
Will I need to have a PC with NetBSD already installed to cross compile
the OS and/or ports, or is most available over the net?
Getting X up and running would be nice, though is by no means essential
(I'm quite at home running screen, for example).
Thanks in advance for any comments.

I think the 728 is the best choice (64mb ram instead of 32 and longer
battery life).

I guess it is a good idea to use NetBSD current wich means there are no
binaries available. A PC running NetBSD allready is the easy way, but not
really needed, you can crosscompile your NetBSD-Target from Linux for example.
I don't own that kind of hardware but i think these articles help if you
want to get things running:

It's quite possible and i would try it for sure . Here is a 720 making a
wireless network connection:

And here runs Doom on a 720:

I have a Psion 5MX Pro, alas only Linux supports it.
