I had a linksys router at one time (not wireless). Its IP address was
192.168.0.1. Could they be the same?

Assuming the problem I'm having IS with my video card, I'm wondering the
following. What is a good low-end video card that works well with Linux
and can easily drive my simple requirements (1024 x 768 at 85 refresh
rate)? I don't need much. I just hate using on-board video.
Preston
www.tigerdirect.com has an nVidia card TnT2 for $10. I used the same card
for
about a year in Suse 7.3 and it worked just fine for me. Basically though,
I'd say any nVidia card you can afford will be fine.
John
Why nVidia as opposed to ATI? Is it better for general business purposes?
Is it good quality, picture wise. I'm pretty picky in that regard. Nothing
to do with 3D, just picture quality.
Preston

Personal experience has shown me that nVidia cards (including the low-end
ones, like the TNT2), have given fine quality, whether in 3D or not. I've also
learned that ATI cards can be finicky as hell sometimes, even in M$' OS's.

Re: Revisiting Suse 9.2 Performance Thread

| Quote: | Hello gang,
This is a bit long, but hopefully there is some sort of lesson that one may
draw by reading it completely.
A while back someone started a thread on Suse 9.2 and how slow he found it.
At the time, my own experience seemed to match that person's experience and
I discounted many of the arguments that other people made as poor excuses,
particularly when I was told that waiting sixteen to twenty seconds for
Yast to load was perfectly acceptable.
Well, a couple of days ago, my laptop's hard drive crashed never to recover
again. My file server and the rsync developers made sure that I had good
backups so it was more of a nuisance than anything else.
snip..
This time around I used ReiserFS instead of ext3 as the default file system.
And the new hard drive must have helped too. The good news is that Suse 9.2
performs now very acceptably.
snip..
Is it as fast as Mandrake 10.1, which is my current yardstick for
performance and which I still have on my desktop?
No, but it's *more* than good enough. Additionally, it comes with a newer
version of KDE and the external vga connector works out of the box, which
is something that I needed for teaching and presentations at conferences.
snip...
Take care,
Gonzalo
|
Actually, I also read that thread and was dissatisfied with my Suse 9.2
performance.
I reinstalled, this time only installing KDE etc. and leaving out Gnome.
Was still a fairly large install by the time I added all I needed
(wanted). Result was a much faster response time. Same drive, same
file system. |

| Quote: | Odd. This just shouldn't be. (Not that that helps.)
I'd try deleting hda3 and if your adventurous hda2 as well (you can fix
fedora's fstab later). Then see what yast wants to do with the free
space.
YaST has been an over-engineered monster for a long time now. (Please
don't flame me guys.)
Good luck.

I now have the 9.2 pro iso, and will see if it reacts the same. If the
installer is newer, maybe the same problem will not occur. Perhaps I'll
try 9.1 again first just to see if deleting the partition I'm trying to
use helps. I'll report back. Thanks.

I had similar issues when running Suse 9.1. Turned out the firewall was not
allowing access to the router. Don't remember the permanent fix but
remember, if I disabled the (Suse) firewall, I could access it at
192.168.1.1 and configure it. As soon as I reenabled the firewall, I
couldn't access the router. |

Re: Blank shutdown/terminal screens in Suse 9.2

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but it didn't work.
I've tried playing about with the "vga" parameter for grub with some
results. You can find the hex codes for different resolutions with the
"hwinfo --framebuffer" command. I've tried 1024x768 (default),
1280x1024 (grub says it's invalid) and 640x480. The latter one booted
properly through the bootsplash, but my ctrl+f1 console is all garbled
and corrupted. It changes when you type though, so it's cleary a
display problem. I'm going to try a few more modes but it's quite time
consuming. |

Nice try Peter, but anyone who knows you and your s**t postings knows this
is not true.
Sorry Peter, but you know as well as I do that your statement
is nothing but a lie.
Core members of the Suse groups have asked you to leave because you are
nothing but a thorn in the side of their honest attempts at Linux advocacy.
If this were not true, you would not see the need to send follow ups
to alt.test, but since you know it is indeed true you have to try and
save face somehow.
Follow ups set appropriately and let your public deal with you because
you are nothing but a detriment to Linux and Linux advocacy.
At times I really wonder if you really work for Microsoft because you
really do no good as a Linux advocate. |
