A lot of hidden files, like .proto & .mrg

So what are al those things anyway?
Some sort of backup? If it is, I think it's rather messy.
They differ with the 'real' version, and most files are not the same
amongst .new, .mrg and .proto either.

Can they safely be deleted or moved to another location?
