Below is a portion of an email logwatch sent me. I don't run Postgres so
I was surprised to see 288 session open requests. Can someone tell me
what may be happening here?

I run two cron jobs that execute every 5 minutes which would tie into the 288

times per day but neither of those involve postgresql. I'll have to do some
research on Webmin as that is on this system and could be checking to see if a
process is running.

I did, but unfortunately the screen then stays blank until I get the

I run a pretty vanilla setup of FC4 and during startup I see "bluetooth

FC3 uses udev so try this:

1. Open a terminal and write tail -f /var/log/messages

2. Connect the USB stick to the computer.

3. You should now in the termial window se some lines that could be
helpful.

thanks, that worked, my "Sigmatel stir4200" seems to be device "irda0" Smile
it's just that there is no irda0 in /dev...
i tried to run irdadump with -i irda0 anyway, it took the parameter, but

read up on the irda tools in /usr/share/doc

you will need to load the irda modules and set /etc/modprobe.conf
correctly for your pc. Then live and understand "irattach"

google on irda for how-to's

I was able to get irda synching with a palm 5 this way.

I haven't tried it, but you can probably install it by:
yum install xcdroast

You'll need to have a good yum.conf (like the one available at
fedorafaq.org). Also I'm not sure what your deinition is of readily
available, but a quick google search led me to an RPM (ans SRPM) of it.

Also, what about DVDs? Fedora seems to be crippled too in playing DVDs,

let alone burning them.

To get everything you need to play DVD's, just type:
yum install ogle

What is available to say make DVDs from Avi/Wmv and Mpeg files?

I haven't looked into this, but a google search of AVI DVD Linux pointed
here: http://mightylegends.zapto.org/dvd/dvdauthor_howto.php Also note
that every package listed is available via yum.

What about ripping?

DVD::RIP, an excellent frontend for transcode, runs great on my Fedora
Core 2 box. I compiled transcode from source, but RPM's are available.

I found a yum config. It found some, but not all the parts you mention.

Everything I have listed I installed via yum; for the record I am using
Fedora Core 2. I have the following repositories in my yum.conf:

Fedora.us Extras (Stable)
Livna.org - Fedora Compatible Packages (stable)
FreshRPMs
Dag APT Repository

In addition to the Base & Updates. Even if you can't find the packages
with yum, just go to google and search: PACKAGE_NAME Fedora RPM
90% of the time you can find it.

DVD ripping: I use transcode to rip chapters from a dvd to divx avi files.

#!/bin/csh -f

set x=1
while ( $x <= 9 )
transcode -i /dev/dvd -x dvd -T 1,$x -g 720x480 -M 2 -B 2,0 -s 5 -o ch0$x.avi -y divx5 -w 1618 -f 23.976024
@ x = $x + 1
end
while ( $x <= 15 )
transcode -i /dev/dvd -x dvd -T 1,$x -g 720x480 -M 2 -B 2,0 -s 5 -o ch$x.avi -y divx5 -w 1618 -f 23.976024
@ x = $x + 1
end

(note - change the last while loop to the number of chapters on the dvd or
substitute with a variable.)

Then use avimerge to combine the chapter files into a hug avi if you want
to.

Well first you must get the source (from the release notes):

#Change directory to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/, and issue the following

$ rpmbuild -bp --target=i386 kernel-2.6.spec

but it has worked with --target=i686

/usr/src/linux make xconfig

[...] This is where you can specify your using an Athlon. Next edit

I have used -1.27_FC3.2 as EXTRAVERSION...

Thank you very much! It has worked fine. I can't say, what I was doing wrong
that this "traditional" way did not succeed earlier... Of course, I would
like to be able to get a kernel-rpm - it was easily possible with all Fedora
kernels < 2.6.11-* using
<http://crab-lab.zool.ohiou.edu/kevin/kernel-compilation-tutorial-en/> but
I'm not so extremely ambitious ;-)

Could you please describe the way you do it? All attempts to build
customized Fedora kernels (as a rpm or "traditional") keep failing on my
athlon machine since the kernel version 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 (message-ID
d5rb0h$p1r$01$1@news.t-online.com>).
As a result I use vanilla kernels (2.6.11.11 at the present time) with
the desired configuration. There is no reason to complain as far as they
run without problems, but I really wonder what is going on...

Regards,
Ilja

Well first you must get the source (from the release notes):

#Obtain the kernel-<version>.src.rpm file from one of the following sources:
* The SRPMS directory on the appropriate "SRPMS" CD iso image
* The FTP site where you got the kernel package
* By running the following command: up2date --get-source kernel

#Install kernel-<version>.src.rpm (given the default RPM configuration,
the files this package contains will be written to /usr/src/redhat/)

#Change directory to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/, and issue the following
command: rpmbuild -bp --target=i386 kernel.spec

Next I usually copy the source to /usr/src/linux-2.6.11 and link it to
/usr/src/linux (many programs look there for your kernel source):
mv /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.11/linux-2.6.11 /usr/src/
ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.11 /usr/src/linux

Now go to your kernel source directory & configure your kernel:
cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig

Since I'm a laptop, my hardware isn't going to change so I only compile
modules of stuff I have. Eg. I know my sound card uses snd-intel8x0 so
I build that & I leave all other sound cards unchecked. This is where
you can specify your using an Athlon. Next edit /usr/src/linux/Makefile
and enter EXTRAVERSION = -prep (change whatever the default EXTRAVERSION
is).

Finally when I'm all configured, I issue:
make clean bzImage modules modules_install

Now issue the following:
cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.11-prep
cp /usr/src/linux/.config /boot/config-2.6.11-prep
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-prep
mkinitrd 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 /boot/initrd-2.6.11-prep.img

Finally, edit /etc/grub to include the new kernel; just copy one of the
entries automatically generated by RPM but point it to your kernel (Eg.
copy the 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 entry and change 1.14_FC3 to prep).

Hi,

I want to install Fedora Core 3 on a i686 machine.

Am I right in saying the i386 ISO's are i386 not i686.

Yep, there's no i686 iso; here is an exert from the release notes:

"Fedora Core 3 is optimized for Pentium 4 CPUs, but also supports earlier
CPUs (such as Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, and including
AMD and VIA variants). This approach has been taken because Pentium-class
optimizations actually result in reduced performance for non-Pentium-class
processors, and Pentium 4 scheduling is sufficiently different (while
making up the bulk of today's processors) to warrant this change."
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc3/x86/

Can I get a ready compiled i686 version of Fedora or do I have to
install
the i386 version and then compile the thing from Source RPM's ?

Is there any third party offering ready built i686 ISO's ?

Most repositories only offer an i386 and an x86-64 version. You could
rebuild everything from SRPM's, but if you're going that far, why don't
you just run Gentoo?

I happen to run both Gentoo (2005.0) and Fedora Core 3 (both on this
laptop actually). Honestly the difference for most purposes is minimal, I
only notice Gentoo's speed advantages in heavy processing like transcoding
video or long compilations, etc. I do always recompile my Fedora kernels
to my processor (Pentium-M) and I remove all the modules that I will never
use.

Many thanks in advance,

Aaron

Sorry for the short response earlier, I meant to hit cancel not send, and
to answer the questions later..

Great, thanks, no hurry I am just feeling around and looking over the fence
before I jump over so to speak.

I have AMD Athlon XP CPU's on all my machines and do long compilations
mainly.

So I would like kernel, library and tools optimized to my CPU as best as
possible.

Well you can always rpmbuild and install the kernel, libc, & gcc

yourself, but I wouldn't go beyond that in Fedora.

Quote:
I would prefer to stick with Fedora, but whats Gentoo like, is it Gnome or
KDE, or both ?

Gentoo is very different from most distributions, depending on how you

install it, it may come with no X at all by default (Stage 1, basically
just a bootstrap), It's main feature is known as portage. It's
essentially a collection of package source files, all designed to work
with each other. When you run emerge <program_name>, it's like using
apt-get (in Debian) or yum (in Fedora) to install the program, except
that instead of downloading the program & its dependencies as binaies,
it downloads their source files and compiles them in order. Obviously
you can custom tailor Gentoo to your machine more than almost any other
distro, esp. with the use of CFLAGS & USE flags. Gentoo is generally
the first distro to have the latest releases; I have Gnome 2.10 and KDE
3.4.1 installed right now (as well as a few other windows managers, like
Fluxbox & Enlightenment). If you consider Gentoo, you may want to first
install it on a spare drive, as you'll likely make some mistakes the
first time you install it (I know I did); I've never tried a stage 2 or
3 install, but they should be easier.

Is it a SE Linux descendant at all ?

There is a hardened version which includes SE support.
