Sadly, your best bet is to do this work on a PC or mac.
On the Octane I can have DAP and MixViews, both of which
work but aren't terribly robust. I also have a tardist of
glame (old version) from neko but haven't tried to install
because of some old freeware prereq issues.

Much of the problem with the old sgi packages seems to
revolve around file formats. Also there are a limited of
filters etc.

I've run Audacity on a mac, it is fast and reasonably
friendly and robust. It would be lovely to have this
running on the octane...

Can this be done with an sgi octane?

It's got both S/PDIF (coaxial 2-track) and ADAT (optical 8-track)
inputs/outputs, and the Soundtrack software can be used for adjusting
the tracks. Soundtrack is far from the world's most sophisticated
software for that purpose, however.

I haven't got an idea. I'm planning to try the same on a 1*10k@175 MHz
eventually.

Not to my knowledge. I've tried asking the developers about porting
JACK to SGI hardware, but my question bounced from the mailing list.

No use, the software is the same.

Up to you. If you don't mind fiddling for hours to get the hardware
and software just right...

Or is better to look for a more recent sgi workstation or buy a new pc
with a linux distribution (agnula?)?

Thanks!
