Thanks, that really did help. I also just checked the contents of each of
the packages on the FTP site to tell me what is in the other distribution
sets as well. Something tells me I have come across that info before,
though...

Long time since I read the INSTALL.* files except for looking at an
outline of changes introduced in the latest NetBSD releases (I never
had serious challenges installing NetBSD on my computers). After reading
these files more carefully I see that a description of kernel sets
is available in the NetBSD release contents section.
Hope this reference will be useful for you too.
Cheers,
Igor. |

Nice to see that this information helped you.
My pleasure,

to The NetBSD Guide, though. But the machine description files

Hello.
A description of each kernel available will be a good improvement
to The NetBSD Guide, though. But the machine description files
provide a good introduction to available kernels:
---------------------------------
# $NetBSD: GENERIC,v 1.595.2.11 2004/08/30 09:52:37 tron Exp $
#
# GENERIC machine description file
#
# This machine description file is used to generate the default NetBSD
# kernel. The generic kernel does not include all options, subsystems
# and device drivers, but should be useful for most applications.
[...]
---------------------------------
# $NetBSD: GENERIC.MP,v 1.4 2003/03/05 10:28:00 grant Exp $
#
# GENERIC.MP -- Generic, plus enable Multiprocessor support.
#
---------------------------------
# $NetBSD: GENERIC_TINY,v 1.61.2.3 2004/07/15 20:28:05 he Exp $
#
# GENERIC_TINY -- suitable default for 4M machines
# No EISA, PCI, or SCSI.
#
---------------------------------
# $NetBSD: GENERIC_PS2TINY,v 1.24.2.3 2004/07/15 20:27:37 he Exp $
#
# GENERIC-style kernel config for IBM PS/2 with MCA bus. It only contains
# IBM PS/2 related stuff and has been generally trimmed down somewhat,
# so that the kernel is small enough to be usable for 4MB machines. This
# configuration is also used for INSTALL_PS2 kernels.
I hope that this description will help you to make the right
decision.
Cheers,
Igor. |

Hi,
It may be just me, but I am unable to find _any_ documentation on the
distribution sets provided during installation. I wanted to get some more
in-depth information on the contents of these sets. And what are the
GENERAL.MP and GENERAL_TINY and similar kernel packages?
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction Thanks,
