Fortunately IRIX is quite easy and user-friendly. Standard Unix stuff (you
know, like /etc/init.d/<blah> start/stop), and also easy administration
GUI.
Have fun...

Thanks for that -ks.
I have found it hard getting much information about the OS what so ever,
let alone getting a copy of the installation disk.
Can somebody point me in the correct direction please as I am a complete
Newbie at SGI and know absolutely jack.
You find some more information about IRIX and O2 here:

Thanks for the pointer for more info. |

I have recently come into ownership of a SGI 02 MIPS. However the
problem is that:
1: I don't know the root password
2: You can't boot them into single user (so I have been told).
You can boot in single user mode : at "stop for maintenance" prompt, hit
esc or click the button. Hit 5 or click "enter command monitor" and type
"single". It will boot in single user mode, however it'll ask you the root
password at some time during the process so that won't help you.
Another option is to look carefully at the OS version reported on the boot
screen; there are a lot of very suitable exploits for IRIX easily found on
the net, especially if the system carries the standard insecure base
install with the guest account (no pasword) and some others.
If the guest login is active, you certainly can find a way to hack into
the system easily.
There's another option : if you have a SCSI enabled linux box lying
around, you can mount the disk on it and edit the password file (XFS
support is standard into all linux distributions for years now).
