O2: Is it possible to upgrade an R5k O2 to an R10k?

In this blast from the past Mr Reputable served to both enlighten
and confuse this crucial issue:

Yes, but you have to swap the complete mainboard incl. carrier.
I don't know if the chassis is different too (R5K-O2 have 2 slots
for harddisks, R10K's only one.).
SOME of the original O2s were R5000 only. The later ones have a
(user) removable metal piece (between the two drive bays on an R5K O2)
that you take out by removing a screw from the bottom of the O2's
skirt.
The way to tell is to look at the chassis, if there is a screw in the
bottom of the skirt (no jokes here), and the little metal piece looks
like it might slide out, your O2 is "R10K ready". If the O2
chassis looks like it's one piece, with no way to remove the metal
piece between the drives, then that metal chassis is for R5K only.

Now Greg knows this stuff at least 110%, but for the unwashed I'd add
this:
a. - Mine had 2 screws rather than one. And they are in fact on the
BOTTOM of the O2, centered between the 4 feet. These are the
only screws on the bottom of the O2, but all they do is hold the
little separator in place, not the entire chassis.
b. - The 'little metal piece' is quite craftily disguised as an
integral
part of the chassis, so don't give up until you have removed both
hard drives as well as the motherboard/cpu unit and then laid the O2
on its side.
c. - Now you can remove both screws and voila, the vertical separator
now can slide right out, leaving plenty of room for the new R10k or
R12k motherboard with the much fatter cpu.
So do not conclude that your R5k O2 is 'un-upgradeable' just by a
visual check. Actually perform a disassembly to be 100% sure on
this issue.
