Hi all,
I've got two deskside Onyxs (Onyxii???), one of which I am stripping for
spares. If you need a replacement fan, I can sell you mine. I am over in the
UK, so posting it to you shouldn't be a problem. However, if failing fans is
an inherent problem, knowing my luck the fan in my working system will fail
after I have sold you my spare!!!
If you are feeling brave, strip the fan unit down and clean the motor out.
It may well be that your fan is full of fluff/dust which is why it does not
work. Bear in mind that if it has never been cleaned there will be about a
decades worth of accumulated dust in there, so its no wonder it does not
work.
Hope that helps

Alex, if you do get a response please post it here as a friend of mine has a
similar problem with a rack mount Onyx. After a couple of minutes he gets an
error with fan1 RPM and the system shuts down.

No. Not yet. Haven't tried it tho. At the moment the machine isn't
needed, and my time is.
I see I failed to put enough quesionmarks in my original post. Maybe
that's why I didn't see any replies until now.
So the main issues here are:
- Is there a known problem with the rpm detection and control logic, or
the fan?
- Does someone in the .nl area have a replacement fan?

The system won't start, because the big fan in the bottom isn't turning,
or doesn't turn fast enough.
I'm not sure if it is the fan tho, I can turn it by hand, and it doesn't
feel like there is any resistance and runs freely.
But sometimes the fan won't start, and when it starts (I give it a spin,
shove it in the machine and turn the key), the machine boots, but when
it gets to do some work, and system electronics tell the fan to speed
up, the system shuts down with an rpm failure.
It there a known problem, is it the fan, is it the rpm-detection logic,
or de speed control.

Does someone have a replacement fan, or tips how to get the machine
going without the fan (possibly with another fan), or some way to fake
the rpm-feedback to the system.
Oh. Before I get offers for replacement fans from .au, or .us, my
location is .nl.
