Now sorted (ish). Solution:

edit ~/.kde/share/config/kmixrc and set AllowDocking to false. As soon as
AllowDocking is true, it dies when started. With it set to false it at
least runs in its own window without problems.

I suspect that's a bug and it isn't handling taskbar display properly when
more than one mixer device is available.

Now to see if I can raise the energy to try installing a new version (I'll
probably upgrade the whole OS soon anyway)

cheers

Slackware 10.0, using ALSA, kmix *was* running fine with my
Ensoniq PCI card, until I added a Hauppage WinTV card to the
system. Then things got a little screwy; running alsaconf only
detects my Ensoniq card, but applications seem to see it as card
1 with the TV card being card 0.

kmix just crashes on launch with a 'kmix is crashing' error,
which isn't too helpful. I expect it's got some cached info
*somewhere* and isn't happy about things after the TV card was
fitted. Anyone know where such a cache is and whether I can
delete it so kmix will work things out itself when next
launched?

FYI, kmix --version gives:
Qt: 3.3.2
KDE: 3.2.3
KMix: 2.0.1

Can you run alsamixer from a terminal without problems? Tr y and
remove .kde/share/config/kmix*. After running kmix they will all
be re-created.

Yep, no problem running alsamixer (under any account) except that I now
have to pass '-c 1' for it to find the Ensoniq card; otherwise it now
finds the WinTV Brooktree Bt878 board by default. I'm assuming that's
what's messing up KMix...

I've tried removing the ~/.kde/share/config/kmix* files but no luck there
- KMix still dies when launched and doesn't even recreate the files (so it
seems it's failing at an early stage)

Backtrace from the crash as follows:

(I just did a find in files under ~/.kde for 'Ensoniq' and the only places
it's referenced are in the two kmix* files which I've temporarily renamed.
Of course that doesn't mean that something isn't trying to access the
board by number rather than name :-)

cheers
