I do agree. As I say in another post, my 2 other WD drives were working
fine for years.

Go figure.

Good point. I went through the 48-bit LBA thing with my motherboard in

the course of all this.

I still don't know if the disk was bad or what, but the Seagate is
working at full functionality.

Just thought it would be useful info to pass along.

Thanks prg,

I do agree, especially since the other 2 hds on my system are WD!

They've worked fine for years. That's why I chose another one in the
first place.

But this one was maddening, whatever the reason. I was beginning to
doubt my sanity. (That's not a hard thing to do, though... ;-)

Got the notes, thanks. And thanks for all the time you spent trying to
figure this out.

Just for reference, you'd *think* that, but IDE evolved to UDMA, ATA, and
other standards to support higher speeds and especially larger disk sizes.
(Going more than 1024 cylinders and the corresponding 8 Gig was a big deal).
Even now, a number of systems have trouble with drives more than 128 Gig or
arrays of more than 512 Gig, due to overflows in the number of cylinders
seen by the controllers and by the software.

Now I wouldn't go so far as to say Western Digital is not linux
compatible, but I noticed something for the first time: Seagate
expressly says it's drives are linux compatible. It's right on the
outside of the box.

Was afraid you might need to do this and I'm glad BestBuy was good
about an exchange.

I suspect it had to do with the Promise controller on the mobo. WD
(and other disk makers) have had problems with them from time to time.
Seems it has to do the way the mobo maker incorporates the chips/cards
into the rest of the circiutry. I've never been able to decipher the
reported details of such glitches, so I don't really know if there is a
common thread of causation or just potluck.

As far as "brands" go, I don't pay _too_ much attention to them. I
agree with those that claim it's more luck of the draw re: which batch
or assembly line run the drive was from than the maker per se. They
all make good ones, they all put out turkeys from time to time. Then
again, good past experience can't be ignored and bad ones not soon
forgotten.

While the memories are fresh, you ought to take the time to note
symptoms and your efforts to make it work for future reference. You'll
forget the details in no time and with some notes you will at least
salvage some usefulness from the WD that refused to work. Google's
archiving seems to be unreliable as a means of note keeping these days.

Main thing though, glad you got one working :-)

And thanks for posting your solution.

I had a box with two Western Digital Caviar IDE hard drives in it. One was
1.6GBytes and the other was 4.3 GBytes. I put the 4.3 in the machine to
run Red Hat Linux 5.0, and the 1.6 was in there with Windows 95 on it. It
ran Linux (various Red Hat versions) since mid 1998 until the end of 2004,
when I took the machine out of service and donated it elsewhere. (Three
computers is too many for my desktop situation.)
