Zolo,
sorry for the delay. My mailserver (at the provider) was down for 11
days (!!!). Now it seems to run stable. The adress is
rga@3d-artworx.de
if I don't answer within 24 hours please try
crashed_batman@gmx.net
....just to be sure.
Cheers

Zolo,
it is true ! I have seen these boards already. unfortunallety the
seller had to visit an hospital (he is an old man), he'll be out
either the end this week or the next week's beginning.
There are 3 boards, each of them $400. the reason is simple and sad:
this guy is known in .de from the stone-age till now. He worked with
Konrad Zuse (this is NO joke, I have seen the photos), but now -
thanks to the German Gouvernment - he is bankrupt. Must sell his
house, ordered by lay etc. pp. So he gives away his treisures to those
who apprechiate them and he knows they are in good hand. For example I
got a complete Video cutting system. 2 x DigiBeta, 1 x DVCPro Recorder
+ Camera (Camcorder Beta) everything new for about $5.000. I won't
push him, but there is more to come, if anything from interest to this
group, I'll post it immediately.
Back to the DM2. There is a guy from the US I promised to sell him one
of three, but the contact is interrupted. So when I get the beasts the
2nd is yours, the 3rd is mine, ok ? No $.1200 needed, give more what
you want - it will help the old guy a bunch. That's what is all about,
not mentioning the DM2. In this age - findig an appartment etc. is not
that easy. He is one of those people who truly didn't deserve this. He
is some kind of institution of his one - that's Germany's way to say
thank you for the switch to color TV, for inventing DAB and parts of
DBTV and and and... F*** 'em.
Cheers
Ralf
Hi Ralf,
I sent you a private email message at your listed email address. If
that is not the correct address, please let me know how I can contact
you directly. Thanks!

it...yeah right)
and I can't seems to find anything on the Sony web site either. I
think SGI O2 has a standard VGA connector though it needs monitor with
"sync on green"; that's all I was able to find
out so far...anyone knows ?

Yes. The O2 does output separate sync (which is used by PCs) besides the
sync-on-green. Basically You can use every generic PC monitor.
However, some cheaper models don't filter out the BIAS on the green line
which is from the sync-signal. On these monitors the picture will look
greenish...

That would be the "green" pin, but I don't think you want to cut it off

Hi,
I've just bought a Personal Video for my Octane, and have one of these
Miranda VIVO adapters from a previous life... I was wondering if they
were a completely-hardware solution, or do I need software to go with
the device to make it work with applications ?

try console-boot without the gfx board.
noticing the log mentions something about the gfx and xbow.
obviously you cant remove the xbow, but you can try without the gfx. |

Dead Fuel
|
|
|
Reposting this in .hardware, didn't remember it existed, sorry.
----------
Our Fuel recently started refusing to boot up.
Attaching a serial console, I can see the bootup messages. All the
initial diagnostics go through just fine. Attempting to go to single
user from the hard drive or to boot miniroot from CD both result in
a panic. I was smart enough not to have installed the Customer
Diagnostics CD when the machine was still alive, so I haven't gotten
any further in diagnosing the issue.
The machine is no longer under warranty and we don't have a service
contract either. (I know - massively stupid.)
SGI believe it's a case of fried CPU and are telling us to buy a
new or refurbished machine because just shipping a replacement CPU
over from abroad will cost over 5000 euros, which would probably be
more than what they would charge us for a refurb Octane2 with V12.
A new Fuel with a 700 MHz R16000 and 1 GB of RAM now costs 14500
euros (list price excl VAT; we would probably get an edu discount),
and three years of FullCare would cost slightly over EUR 2700 (ditto).
Anybody with any ideas, or a spare R14000 they want to part with for
a reasonable price? :-)

By buying a used system. Try Michael Lancaster who now works for (and
is a co-founder iirc) of http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk - he was selling
several Illusion systems in the past and is still offering support for
it. |

Got an U2. VIVO (as well as an U2) is just a simple converter which
passes the video through the O2/Octane PVO camera port (as the port is
CCIR-601 compatible). A similar solution exists for the Indy's CCIR-601
compatible camera port. Skilled people could probably solder one
together themselves. I paid £500 for an ex-demo U2.
For capturing you may use any application that supports capturing from
the camera port. Mediarecorder/dmrecord is one, as is Media Illusion.

noticing the log mentions something about the gfx and xbow.
obviously you cant remove the xbow, but you can try without the gfx.

Bootup-time Odyssey diagnostics pass fine, and since miniroot won't
boot in serial console either, SGI is guessing it is the CPU that's
fried. Is removing V12 something that can be done yourself without
too much hassle?

It's been a while since I've been in a Fuel, but it should be a matter
of a screw or two and pulling the card out.
Have you checked to verify that the fans are working? My general
experience with CPUs is that they either work or not, so if you're
seeing the boot diags work, the CPU may be ok, just overheating due
to a failed fan or missing duct.
