What does it mean?
Do you know how many linux users (I don't think most of linux distros
require them to register) are there? How many Windows users? |

If you didn't download the cd yet you could also install pkg-get and |
with this you can install all the packages you like , it even checks the
dependicies and install them also.

I have a SBPCI128 crd which Solaris 10 recognised, so I did not need the
other driver. |

Check the output from the "dmesg" command or the /var/adm/messages
file: for each IDE/ATAPI device installed in the system Solaris 10 x86
should report which (Ultra-)DMA or PIO mode is used for the device.
You should find something like this:
IDE device at targ 0, lun 0 lastlun 0x0
model WDC WD1000BB-32CCB0
ATA/ATAPI-5 supported, majver 0x3e minver 0x0

what do you mean by "cannot access" ? Please post a copy
of your /var/adm/messages, prtconf -vp and prtpicl -v output.
You need to ensure that the permissions on the device are
appropriate (I believe Juergen's install script does this),
and that you have the correct driver alias for the device
in /etc/driver_aliases.

After taking out the sb128 card it did not have the 1370 chipset, I |
think it was 4550 or something. I looked around and had a spare sblive
with the emu10k and installed it, with the drivers from bolthole and
walla! I now have sound.

Huh? With heavy disk activity (HDD or ATAPI CD/DVD, sequential
accesses) on single cpu systems, there is a big effect on system
performance when DMA transfers are not in use: almost 100% cpu time
spent in kernel handling ide interrupts / pio mode data transfers.
The user often notices this as bad X server performance.
Fortunatelly Solaris 8/9/10 x86 is able to enable and use DMA on IDE
HDDs on most systems, and the release version of Solaris 10 x86 is
supposed to support DMA transfers on ATAPI CD devices, too. |

My guess is that you can find these numbers in Microsoft, Redhat, and other
OS vendors' reports to the "wacko" SEC.

I expect that I'll have a go at porting the ext2 driver from Solaris 9
to Solaris 10 when I get round to upgrading. Since the upgrade isn't
going to be totally painless*, this might take a while.

don't think that I noted the format/growfs commands that I used so I'll
have to reasearch it all again. And before I even get that far, I'll
have to shift up the fdisk partitions that follow them.
