CD/DVD Drive Speed

I'm fairly new to Linux so please be gentle, but I have an annoying little
problem with my system and the speed of the DVD Writer drive.
I like my system as it is nice and quiet when running, playing DVD's and
music CDs are fine with no performance issues, but when I try to rip a DVD
or CD the drive seems to still be very slow and never gets up to full
speed.
Using K3B and burning disks with speed detection set to auto the drive goes
to full speed (whines like a banshee) but I can burn a full CD in 3-5
minutes no problems, but ripping a disk can take 20 minutes as it seems to
keep the drive in "quiet" mode. Copying data from the disks seems to have
the same issue.
I'm using Grip, (cdparanoia) for the ripper, but even with all the paranoia
and scratch detection turned off the drive never gets up to full speed.
Is there a way to kick the drive into fast (full noise) mode when I want to
copy a disk or access data, but leave it "quiet" when just playing a DVD or
CD?
