Or, you could do it for her by SSHing into her machine.
If she's not on a fixed IP, perhaps have her send you an e-mail from which
you should be able to determine her IP address by scanning the headers.
Have her send it to you at a prearranged time when you can receive it
quickly and get into her machine while she stays online. |

That has always been the case. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Yet
everybody somehow suddenly 'needs' the latest version. :-(

YMMV as always

For the specific CD burning problem, I could tell you my experience. I |
have installed SUSE 10 on hard disk, also, I tried Suse 10.1 Live CD
without installation and MEPIS 6.0RC2 live CD also without installatioin.
SUSE 10 and SUSE 10.1 live CD I can erase and burn CD as normal user
without a problem. but MEPIS 6RC2 live CD only allow me to erase CD as
root. Just for your reference. |

10.1 had problems. These problems are solved the moment you install it.

Very easy.
There are other ways to do this as well. YaST can do remote
configuration, I believe. I just did not try it.

No. 10.0 was release 2005.
2) What was released in april / may 2006 ? What is the current version?
Yes, 10.1
Does this version have YOU?
Yes.
Can I get printed manauls and support ?
yes, although the manuals are not as extended as they were up till 9.3
I'm
following this link and searching the forums, and I seem to be missing
something:
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/
That doesn't show a release date, amazon shows nov 2005, but this post
mentions an April release and the new package manager:
http://groups.google.com.br/group/alt.os.linux.suse/browse_frm/thread/f1b20cdfc079a270/202eaa690c68e354?lnk=gst&q=10.2+delayed&rnum=1#202eaa690c68e354
It is a Novell product, so beliecve Novell. There is a new package
manager. However the generic user should not notice a great difference
(If you say that there is a big difference, then you are the system
administrator, not the user)
3) Suse 10.2 is AFAIK being released in 2007 . Is that right, ie, at
least 14 months between versions? I'm not complaining, just stating my
confusion.
You are confused by what Amazon tells you. There used to be a 6 months
between versions. Now this has been extended to 8 months.

If we all waited for next years version we would be waiting for ever. Best
to start with what is available now.
Firsly we know that 10.0 is a great distro, at least as good as 9.3
(admittedly 9.3 was a landmark distro, perfect right out of the box from
very early in it's release period). 10.1 is said by many to be better but
with some problems with the software manager, these have a work-a-round and
no doubt eventually a fix.
But, as it's your mother, concider paying so that she can have the video
licences installed for her at install time (SLED10). Otherwise describing
how to do the Packman bit over the phone wouldn't be easy. She also gets
her support link so saving you any worry that she might get stuck. It's
only something like $39 a year, whats that compared to all she has done for
you, changed your nappies, fed you beef and dumplins, baked sticky toffee
pudding... but don't feel like I'm preasurizing you or anything. |
