Look here:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/newsroom/winxp/WindowsPrinciples.mspx

MS now grants us the right to install e.g. SUSE on our computers, I quote:

"Ultimately, end users are free to choose which software they prefer to
use."

I'm deeply moved and very relieved.

Olav

The whole statement is
<quote>

1. Installation of any software. Computer manufacturers and customers
are free to add any software to PCs that run Windows. More broadly,
every computer manufacturer and customer is free to install and promote
any operating system, any application, and any Web service on PCs that
run Windows. Ultimately, end users are free to choose which software
they prefer to use.

</quote>

Quite funny to read anyway....

First I'm granted the right to install software on "PCs that run
Windows" only.

Next software is specified as "operating system", "any application"
and "and any Web service" but still on "PCs that run Windows"

Can Windows do anything like zen or user mode linux. What usage is
another operating system running on top of Windows anyway ?
I know Windows in the old days ran on DOS, but is this still true then ????

And why is a Web service not covered by the term any application ?
Does this implicit means any application not serving any purposes execpt
Web services ?

"Ultimately, end users are free to choose which software they prefer to
use."
Thank you very much, but also notice the "PCs that run Windows" part was
omitted this time....

There are a number of different ways to run linux on top of Windows. you
can run colinux http://www.colinux.org/ (you can even run it from a usb
drive, Cygwin creates a bash environment, and vmware allows you to install
a virtual copy of linux that can be run from within Windows.
As for the usage, I must say I have played around with all of these
options but have not ended up using any for any period of time after the
testing was done.

That's what I'm doing - SuSE 10 on Microsoft VirtualPC.

No significant problems so far...

I would do it the other way around. :-)

When they do not force/compel/coerce retailers to install Windows on there
boxes UNLESS/UNTIL the user request it, then we haven't made ANY progress.
When they offer Windows by default and you can request one WITHOUT any
operating system AND PAY LESS for it, then we've made progress. If they
preinstall a Linux version and charge you for that, that IS PROGRESS !! We
can't expect them to do the work of preinstalling ANY OS for free. But, if
we want to do it ourselves than we should be allowed to do that WITHOUT
paying a Microsoft tax !!

NEWS Story..."Microsoft grants ALL persons the right to install whatever
software they (the user)choose. They will only charge you if you CHOOSE to
use there software"

The world has just stop spinning...............Smile

I like to be given the 'right' to do something that I have always had the
'right' to do. I hereby grant you the 'right' to breathe...

They will still fight but I think they are starting to realise that people
still think for themselves.

Can I grant you a license and tell you how you are allowed to use it and
then remind you at regular intervals that it is not really yours and that
you only have the 'right' to use it? Oh, and you must not use it on more
than one machine... if you use it on another machine you will need another
license. etc.

It is just words, no one owns words. Even though Microsoft think they own
the word 'windows'...

Is it working yet ? If my sig shows up it's working. If not I'll try again
when I'm sure I got it right. Never used one up till now. But yours was
so cool I thought now would be a good time to start.
