X server on startup

I am having problems with X on a new AMD64 (but with old ATI rage video
ccard). on startup it says:
x-server can not be started on display : 0

the log file says something like:
failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not exist, 0)

but, I can load X manually, except i am at a blank screen with no way
out I know.

(I am familiar with linux, not sun, so I dont know why backspace, page
up/down, ctrl/alt/backspace dont work)
