Hi,

Is there a way to restore a tape done with vdump on a tru64 machine? I
cannot go back to the original machine to use gtar for example.

Thanks.
Nope.

Vdump is unique to Tru64.

Slight correction I think... vdump is part of the Veritas Advanced File
System (AdVFS) which was included with DEC/Tru64 Unix.

The Veritas support site (http://support.veritas.com) shows a couple of
patches for various versions of AIX so it seems the product was ported.

Symantec still lists the Veritas Cluster Server software, including
support for AIX so all may not be lost yet! I'd suggest getting in
touch with the tech guys there, and they should be able to tell you just
how much you need to spend to get your data back :-)

Alternatively, try posting in comp.unix.tru64 and see if anyone can
offer the vdump/gtar conversion as a service.

HTH,
Andy.

You know, that thought came to me after I posted that, because we just
had this discussion in here about 2 weeks ago. Vdump seemed it could
be a Veritas, I mean, Symantec product. With other names like
vxassist, vxvol, vxprivutil, and the like, it was possible.

If you can get your hands on a Veritas Foundation Suite disk for AIX, I
am sure Symantec will give you a 30 day trial license, gratis, for the
file system software (VXFS) in which vdump is a part of. Another
option is that if you have a HP-UX machine sitting around, it may have
the same licensed software as the Tru64 box did. You can unpack it
there, and move what you want over to the AIX box.

NCR, DEC, HP, and SCO for Unixware (excuse the foul language),all
licensed vxfs from Veritas for thier unices.
