Thanks for you email Erwin! Good job with the SPAMCONTROL patch set!

Since you did not tell, what you did prior of experiencing the problem (I
guess you setup was running smoothly before), I suggest:

The server was running for couple of months, without reboot or any problems.

Yesterday users started complaining that they can not send emails.

No config changes, or upgrades were done recently.

did you use before and after the problem happend ?

Nope, no updates were done recently.

ClamAV ver. 0.88.1 - it is still the same version, I just stopped the QHPSI.

SPAMCONTROL 2.3.16

- Did you change your OS ? This is the 2nd report I have received
mentioning FreeBSD 6.0 to be malfunctioning with parts of SPAMCONTROL. I
would suggest to upgrade to FreeBSD 6.1.

Nope, still the same OS as for the last couple of months.

It is on my to do list to move to 6.1, but for the moment I do not see any
proofs it is the OS that is causing the problem.

When this problem happened ClamAV was puting errors in its log that it can not
open file or directory:

/var/qmail/queue/mess/x/y: Unable to open file or directory ERROR

That was for every incomming message.

I checked in google - a guy was asking in ClamAV's mail list recently for the
same issue, but with Exim, not qmail. So it may not be qmail related.

I also noticed that a customer was able to send us 3 x 300MB emails, but the
time is a bit later after the first errors in clamav's log started, so I do not
know if this is part of the same problem.

At the moment the server is running with disabled ClamAV and there is no any
problems. It it clear to me that it is not the OS or SPAMCONTROL issue, but
ClamAV -> QHSPI issue.

Some suggetions about QHPSI:

- Is there any way SPAMCONTROL to have option what to do if the virus scanner
is not responding/running/#$%$# and QHPSI is enabled?

For example: To deliver / accept the message, and just log that it was not
scanned.

- Maybe to scan a copy of the message so that it doesn't interfere with the
queue in any way (locked file or similar issue)

Nothing should be allowed to mess with qmail's queue, virus scaner or spam
filter. Especially to brake it.

- To be able to save copy of the infected (according to the virus scanner)
emails - into a special folder.

I still have nighmares from 3 years ago when f-prot started to detect a virus
in the email signatures of the users... A copy of the infected emails saved my
ass.

In general QHPSI should NOT trust and asume anything about the virus scanner.

I am open to discussions about the above things. In my experience this is all
a mail admin needs.

Thanks,

Miro

Hi All,

I have qmail (spamcontrol patched) with clam AV using the QHPSI interface
to scan incoming messages. It is running on FreeBSD 6.0

It was working Ok for months and few hours ago the server stopped delivering
any messages, clamd was using 90% CPU and there were a lot errors in its
log:
/var/qmail/queue/mess/6/356529: Unable to open file or directory ERROR

I killed clamd, removed it from QHPSI and stoped/started qmail, even
restared the server. Now qmail seem to deliver new messages OK.

The problem is that in the queue I have ~1300 messages that qmail doesn't
want to deliver - probably because the queue is broken.

They are all sitting in:

/var/qmail/queue/mess/

and I can open and read them - there is nothing wrong with the files.

Is there any way to fix this so that qmail can 'see' them as messages
for delivery?

I saw that there are some tools for fixing qmail queue, but I am not sure
which tool is appropriate for this problem.

I made a backup of the queue folder as well.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks,

Miro
