rczen-updater or something like that as root from a terminal.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, this is one of the services that doesn't
have an rc file created upon installation. Instead, you'll need to use
the full name for the start-up script:

/etc/rc.d/novell-zmd start

Of course, before doing that you may want to check if it's running by
using:

/etc/rc.d/novell-zmd status

Mmm. Bugreport anybody?

Sorry... I couldn't resist. Different SUSE users have different
preferences. Perhaps you prefer the Novell ZMD project or YaST, but
personally I have used the apt for SUSE project
<http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/> during my SUSE experiences over the
years (when I were not using Gentoo, Debian, Ubuntu,...). And even
though the Smart Package Manager is still in it's beta releases, the
project shows so much promise, that both apt for SUSE, YaST and
ZMD-updaters have taken a secondary position at my computer. But that is
my opinion, and you should form you own opinions...

Thank you. Alas, this leads to:

Paarl:/home/huub # /etc/rc.d/novell-zmd status
Checking for ZENworks Management Daemon: dead
Paarl:/home/huub # /etc/rc.d/novell-zmd start
Starting ZENworks Management Daemon done
Paarl:/home/huub # /etc/rc.d/novell-zmd status

Any more ideas/hints?

Thank you,

I'm not too sure that it would need a bug report. Looking at a couple of
my systems, I can see some services that are started in /etc/init.d[0]
that don't have an rc file in /usr/sbin.

[0] Habit makes me keep using /etc/rc.d even though it's been
/etc/init.d for quite some time. Luckily, SUSE/Novell create a symbolic
link so it still works for me :)

Have a look at /var/log/messages and see what the errors are causing it
not to start properly. After a little bit of work, I managed to get zmd
to fail. When restarting it, this is the error shown in
/var/log/messages:

Jul 19 23:25:34 transporter zmd: NetworkManagerModule (WARN): Failed to connect to NetworkManager

Actually, little is the wrong word. I managed to kill it by using:

/etc/rc.d/novell-zmd restart

Unfortunately, I didn't check too thoroughly to see if I could get it
restarted. I did try a restart on the network, since that is one of the
things that zmd depends one, but that didn't seem to help. I could have
dropped down through the run levels, and back up again to RL5, but just
rebooted instead. I think I'll have to break it again and see just what
I can do to get it restarted without having to reboot.

I'm not too sure that it would need a bug report. Looking at a couple of

And have you looked if they had rc* anywhere else, like /sbin. ;-)

I think it is worth a bugreport. The worst that can happen is that they
say WONTFIX. For consisency, I would prefere to have it.
