With a suitable SCSI adapter, whatever you like.
A 68pin disk with adapter will allow you to also make use of the upper
bay. A
combo 50/68/80pin adapter will prevent the use of the upper bay. Both
will
work fine. Shove in a 146GB 68pin + adapter, will work a peach. I've
been
using 9GB 68pin disks with adapters for ages.
The best 50pin disks I've come across were 18GB, but they are hard to
find
now and as such are very valuable. You'll never see them on my site
because
I can always sell them on to companies for far more than a hobbyist
would
pay (typically 70 UKP+). Much cheaper to use a 68/80pin disk + adapter.
Funny old world...
I did actually obtain _forty_ 9GB 50pin disks once, but ended up
selling
almost all of them to a company for 30 to 35 each (they then sell them
on
for more than twice that easily). Thus, don't bother with 50pin, not
worth
the cost, or time spent looking.
Unless you're doing video stuff though, a 9GB or 18GB 68pin with
adapter
will do you fine, and won't cost much. If you are dealing with video
though,
then a 36GB 68pin + adapter would be sweet. I have all these available
of
course, but if you prefer taking a risk as a tradeoff with cost then
there's
always eBay.
Cheers! :)
Ian.

Probably 18 GB was the last "popular" 50-pin SCSI drive, but I know
that at least Seagate made some 36 GB drives (part number ST336918N).
One can easily use a much higher capacity drive on an Indy as long as
XFS is used as the file system. These days, the most common approach is
probably to use a SCA SCSI drive with an 80 pin SCA to 50 pin SCSI
adapter. Even a 300 GB drive should work fine in an Indy.

I've read somewhere that two disks at 7200 rpm could get
to hot, but that was a couple of years ago. A newer shouldn't
get that hot. Also a single modern 10K rpm should be ok.
Remember that if you don't have XFS filesystem you
have a 8Gb limit per filesystem. If you have larger
disks you have to make more filesystems.
