won't really think that linux (2.6.16.20) is so bugged.

The kernel isn't bugged -- Try acpi=force in GRUB
And look into your BIOS settings (make sure IOAPIC is enabled) - and
enable ACPI - these two are intimately related.

Well, you've got an ASSUS motherboard and it doesn't work. This is by
design, they aren't supposed to. Throw that junk away and buy a quality
board (MSI is really good). As an exercise, search this group for other
posts with people having problems with ASSUS boards and you will see why
this is a good idea.
