Right. |
A very long time ago (when R4K was new) there was a short-term
disagreement over
whether to count the external or internal clock rate of the processor
as 'the clock rate'.
It did not take long for everyone to realize the internal (faster
clock) rate was more
representative of the performance improvement over R3K.
So the 75Mhz is the external clock, the 150 is the internal, and
compared to a max R3K
of around 30Mhz,150Mhz is pretty representative of the performance
increase. Agreement was reached inside SGI and then
everything on later IRIX machines agreed on the internal clock rate.
Hopefully I'm remembering this right, not misrepresenting...

setting TOD clock on Indigo

Hello,
I just replaced the battery on my Indigo and now when it boots it reports
this error:
Can't determine CPU speed
Starting up the system...
IRIX Release 6.5 IP20 Version 10070055 System V
Copyright 1987-2003 Silicon Graphics, Inc.
All Rights Reserved.
The system is coming up.
With the OS (6.5.22) up hinv reports the correct speed, 150Mhz, but at the
Command Monitor it reports as only 75Mhz.
Processor: R4000 75 Mhz, with FPU
Primary I-cache size: 16 Kbytes
Primary D-cache size: 16 Kbytes
Secondary cache size: 1024 Kbytes
Memory size: 96 Mbytes
Graphics: GR2-Elan
SCSI Disk: scsi(0)disk(1)
SCSI Disk: scsi(0)disk(2)
south 16# hinv
CPU: MIPS R4400 Processor Chip Revision: 5.0
FPU: MIPS R4000 Floating Point Coprocessor Revision: 0.0
1 150 MHZ IP20 Processor
Main memory size: 96 Mbytes
Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 1 Mbyte on Processor 0

Disk drive: unit 2 on SCSI controller 0
On-board serial ports: 2
On-board bi-directional parallel port
Graphics board: GR2-Elan

Any ideas on how to resove that error message? I've looked on the net as to
how to set the system clock in the Command Monitor but nothing has come up.
Thanks in advance!
